Where's all the work?

Plenty of parcels but next to no letters. More than enough work to fill our day here. That said, we have already started with our relief parcel rounds for town deliveries, which does ease the burden somewhat.

We’ve had them for years. Not sure why you would think they will suddenly disappear.

So did we until last year. If your office does well it will eventually be targeted as future savings.

I don’t see why it would be a problem. Annual leave pretty much drys up at this time of the year so there should be enough staff for dedicated parcel duties.

I think Lou's office is like every office actually should be with enough bums on seats to cope with leave and sick, we haven't even got enough staff for someone on every duty never mind spare, still f***ing lapsing and told to leave/rotate more mail in our own duties.

We don't have enough bums on seats because they are planning on removing 7 duties in the revision.
So we are going in to "peak" 7 bodies down. Add to that the high number on sick and light duties.
We can't even fully staff the duties we have, let alone put in extra ones.

We only have duty cover and a parcel driver because of staff working their days off.

I work in a small office based within a much larger office, the large office hasn't cleared in probably a couple of years and this morning there was so much parcels that the aisles were impassable and the yorks stacked up on the loading bay, even we were struggling and we have a extra man taking bulk of us and nobody finished on time. So the work has arrived ok and the future looks parcel shaped.

We have been recruiting steadily throughout the year but are still shorter on staff than we should be. I saw another new starter being trained up this week. Granted, covering our rounds does rely on people working days off etc so if you are in an office that doesn’t have staff who want to, it is going to be more of a struggle.

My point was more in regard annual leave - we can’t be the only office in the country that has no annual leave available at this time of year? That automatically gives you more staff to assist with parcel duties, compared to the rest of the year when annual leave is taking place.

We have been recruiting steadily throughout the year but are still shorter on staff than we should be. I saw another new starter being trained up this week. Granted, covering our rounds does rely on people working days off etc so if you are in an office that doesn’t have staff who want to, it is going to be more of a struggle.

My point was more in regard annual leave - we can’t be the only office in the country that has no annual leave available at this time of year? That automatically gives you more staff to assist with parcel duties, compared to the rest of the year when annual leave is taking place.

We still have a few guys working their days off and annual leave in our office stopped two weeks ago but there are many reasons why we we are not getting through all the work on a daily basis, not least the fact that revisions have made our duties bigger and more calls = more parcels. We are also delivering more parcels this year than last year when we were out on strike especially the Asos and Boohoo stuff that Evri were doing plus more bigger stuff seems to be in our network instead of with parcel force.

Then there is auto-redelivery and if you're doing the job properly and not dumping packets in wheelie bins you are either slipping half your parcels today to add for tomorrows workload or you are trying all the neighbours and wasting a ton of time that way. Consumer and collection boxes takes time and I have one regular customer that often has well over a dozen collections per day. Plus I've got trigger finger from taking numerous pictures of parcels. The seasonal variations hasn't made that much of a difference because our time has been well and truly eaten up by all the additional things we are now having to do. Many staff are often working past their time and there are over a dozen agency staff in our office and we are still not meeting the performance targets.

Yeah revisions are obviously what are causing offices to melt down. It is also interesting that you bring so many parcels back. Are you not on a round where you can make arrangements with your more prolific parcel addicts as to where you can leave items?

All of mine have safe places assigned and I even have codes for gate locks etc that allows me access to back gardens etc. You shouldn’t need to go that far but it makes life easier for everyone.

It's strange how areas differ for workload.
I would go as far to say this has been the busiest three days i have ever had in my twenty odd years in the job.
Even my manager is shocked at the workload, it's relentless.
Some CDVs are going out with three staff and only just getting the packets done.
It's not sustainable and hoping we have seen the worst of it parcel/packet wise, but I doubt it.
Loads of overtime though.
