Handwritten re-direction to overseas?

Post by yellowbelly »

I've seen mail for previous occupants of a house on my round in one of our collection boxes which the new occupants have
written redirect to an overseas address (not BFPO - a normal overseas address). Previous occupants didn't put a redir in place at all.

Question is - do these handwritten redir instructions to overseas address get sent overseas or is it a no-no and they get RTS?

I could be wrong but as far as I know endorsed mail should be forwarded on, whether it has enough postage is another thing

I work at HWDC out near Heathrow, which does the international stuff. Short answer, no. (They usually get weeded out before they reach us but sometimes gets sent on by mistake.)

Well we don't redirect any international packets, wether they have a redirection or not..

It's time to get rid of all " forwarded" mail as no longer at , or refused.

Pay for the service .

It used to be a requirement, now its "optional". https://www.royalmail.com/sites/royalma ... l-2022.pdf

15.7 Forwarding – unofficial redirections – We are not under any obligation to do
anything with an item that someone requests to be forwarded to another
address other than the return to sender address on the cover. We consider
these unpaid for, forwarding requests to be a form of unofficial redirection
request. Typically in this situation, the original address is crossed out and a
written request (e.g. “please forward to”) is made on the cover to forward the
item to another address. This is normally attempted in order to try to get the
item to the addressee who has moved to another address. In these situations,
the person moving should take out a Redirection service with us or provide
pre-paid stationery. If we find an item that someone has requested be
forwarded to another address then the item may be dealt with or disposed of
at our discretion.

I have seen a couple of unofficial redirections surcharged in the last couple of weeks. About time.

Whats the actual procedure for dealing with handwritten redirections at office level? Do we kill them off?

Local management should tell you, but here we send it back to the MC with the Red X labels and they then raise a surcharge. One of the National "Savings" is that local offices no longer do the surcharge process except for printing the labels for the grey cards.

Probably one thing that varies from MC to MC. We'd just send it back to the DO it's been redirected to. If the item hasn't been opened at the original address, it just gets redirected
