I’m day off cover for 4 rounds.

1 of the duty holders gives me plenty and I go out of my way for them and usually clear their round.

The other 3 don’t give me a thing so we have an agreement. When I say we I mean I have an agreement, they just don’t know about it; any tips left addressed to the postie, I have. We, sorry, I, also agree not to feel guilty when I don’t complete. Which I rarely do. I have zero motivation doing an extra hour to clear it for them.

Some of them are getting £300+, multiple boxes of biscuits and bottles of wine and I’m afraid if they can’t see it in their heart to give me a measly £4 Aldi bottle of plonk then I do nothing for them.

I deliver in a really affluent area, absolutely loaded, usually get about 120, but this is off about 6 customers out of 470.

You get more off people who’ve got less money - council estates - pensioners etc

This is my experience also, it's usually the ones that are no trouble either, ordering stuff.

Shared van duty for last 7 years, share everything, max £20 each + box of cheap biscuits + £20 from posties from a different d.o.(lovely couple both Royal Mail) they bring us ice creams during summer etc
We actually don't want anything, get nothing and we don't feel obliged to do anybody any favours.

I feel a fraud taking tips now. So many couriers and I deliver a batch of junk mail once a week. I wonder if I get my tin of Quality Street from the local dentists this year ? I need fillings done. I'll make an appointment tomorrow.

I didn’t get many tips last year but with everything going on I didn’t expect many anyway. Probably doesn’t help delivering in the poorest area in town.

True. Where I deliver they are probably expecting tips from me!! One of them keeps asking me if I've received my bonus yet.

Last year was my worst year for quite some time but the strikes probably didn't help? The year before that was probably my best ever thanks to covid, It seems quite a few people appreciated our efforts during that time even if management didn't!

If I have a good cover person I sort them out with a generous share of the goodies and cash. If my cover person is s**t they get sweet F.A. I also tell anyone covering to keep whatever they get personally on my round (Although I guess they could choose to do that anyway!) but I ask them just let me know who gives them something so I can thank the customer.

Fortunately I have been doing most of my walk for many years so do ok, even though the last resign chopped off some particularly generous customers. But I can still appreciate how disappointing it can be for reserves being moved about even though we have all been there. I also bung a few quid in the pot for the reg cage staff.

I once knocked into a girls house because there was a alloy wheel with a new trye on it that matched my car and I need it cause my alloy was cracked so I offered to buy it of the girl as it was lying in her front yard,,,She just said take it d f**k out of my garden...I said thx ,then she shouted that's your Xmas tip

I worked my butt off through COVID on a council estate. I got a small packet of chocs from a sweet disabled couple and a lovely fella opening the door said" red or white ?" I said oh,er white- thank you!" Bless him he came out with a soft drink bottle filled with home made white wine. It looked like wee and I couldn't bring myself to open it. That my friends was my tips in over 9 years service on duty cover. Best was in callers when the businesses brought in boxes of chocs.
