Old stamps without barcode are not valid no more, the window to swap them might now be closed if they have not extended it again.

only old stamps that are valid are the special edition stamps (ie Harry Potter theme stamps)

Yes they are, all special edition including Christmas are still valid it's only the standard non barcoded stamps you can no longer use.

Yes, AFAIK only definitive stamps need a barcode. Commemorative stamps are still valid.
