If you’re back late and the office is closed, then inform the manager in writing that you have items in your van. This happened to me not long back and haven’t had any problems, but ideally nothing should be left in a van overnight. If you haven’t informed a manager and they find out out, then, who knows?

There'll be an SOP about returning from delivery somewhere that if you asked yesterday in the office nobody would be able to lay their hands on, but
now there's been an incident the manager will suddenly have close to hand. It will probably say something about ensuring that all mail is
removed from the van on returning to depot.

Consequences might depend on any mitigating circumstances and how secure the van is overnight (in the yard?) and the managers mood.

Happens all the time on a Saturday. Clear it with the manager first. Back the van against a wall. Try to push as much of your items through the DO letterbox with your van keys & PDA and leave a note with your PDA telling your indoor staff to check the van in the morning. If the office is closed, you're still working and there is no manager in the unit this is all you can do. I always took a photo of the items in the van how you left them.

What a joke of a job this has become, leave mail undelivered in your frame for days , no problem, leave a bundle in van overnight, worry about dismissal.

How much mail was left in the van? Could it have been a mistake/human error?

If it’s a “significant human error” then it should be escalated and any audio should be relaeased.
As for dismissal offence, those concerned will probably just be stood down for a delivery or two until it all blows over.

I wonder how many staff have access to these SOP's - they're obviously on the RM network but how many of us have
access to the network? Very few I would say and I've never seen a folder containing hard copies anywhere. Considering
the SOP's referred to are numbered 22/23/24 I'd love to know and see the rest!

Probably depends on what sort of managers you have.

I used to find specials and tracked left in vans. One time, I found about 5/6 tracked parcels all with an advised date of about 4.5 months previous; so many other posties must've ignored them and I was the first to report it.
