Re: Stop doing overtime
The idea that people are going to stop doing overtime to show some kind of a grand gesture is total pie in the sky.
As one other poster has said, people who suggest this are probably either living with parents, have their mortgage paid off, or perhaps have a spouse earning very good money, and also probably have no kids to look after.
It's an absurd suggestion for people who genuinely need the money, and isn't greedy in the slightest. People working overtime are giving up their free time that no doubt people not doing overtime are able to enjoy with a beer or a Netflix binge.
.The lack of empathy is very evident.

Re: Stop doing overtime
You made your life choices, others made theirs, some people set themselves up so they can work to live on standard hours, others want to take huge sports SUV's on finance to give it the big one etc well.......that's all fine & dandy until they start trying to work over 70hrs per week or indulge in illegal 7 day working putiing their colleagues at risk of accident or injury, maybe driving vansPostee2 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 11:30The idea that people are going to stop doing overtime to show some kind of a grand gesture is total pie in the sky.

on their 69th hour of the week on work day 7 and run somebody over?
This needs looking into, and also the working of 2nd jobs & running of businesses on the side like taxi driving etc
The working time directive is a very important piece of UK law that keeps everyone safe in the workplace.

Re: Stop doing overtime
I am lucky that I don’t need to work overtime but would feel annoyed working for £22pence an hour less than standard this really needs to be looked at

Re: Stop doing overtime
I suspect that if that were to happen, RM could lose a good few staff. Doubt it'll affect anyone who works nights much more delivery and collections staff and early and late shifts in MCs, especially PT on lates2chorizon wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 11:43You made your life choices, others made theirs, some people set themselves up so they can work to live on standard hours, others want to take huge sports SUV's on finance to give it the big one etc well.......that's all fine & dandy until they start trying to work over 70hrs per week or indulge in illegal 7 day working putiing their colleagues at risk of accident or injury, maybe driving vansPostee2 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 11:30The idea that people are going to stop doing overtime to show some kind of a grand gesture is total pie in the sky.

Re: Stop doing overtime
You've lost me. I can't remember saying anything about owning a 4*4 SUV or even illegal working. But even if I did have a brand new SUV, or 5 of them, as you say that would be my choice.2chorizon wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 11:43You made your life choices, others made theirs, some people set themselves up so they can work to live on standard hours, others want to take huge sports SUV's on finance to give it the big one etc well.......that's all fine & dandy until they start trying to work over 70hrs per week or indulge in illegal 7 day working putiing their colleagues at risk of accident or injury, maybe driving vansPostee2 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 11:30The idea that people are going to stop doing overtime to show some kind of a grand gesture is total pie in the sky.

As it would be perfectly your choice to not do any overtime, not have any kids, not have a car, and stay at home watching Netflix and eating crisps.
But the point here is, I'm not telling you how to live your life, or to take on some extra responsibility so that you have to start doing more overtime. It's not me doing the judging.
People are fully entitled to make their own life choices and fully capable of it too.
If people want to work 3 jobs, have 6 kids, have cars they can barely afford, go on 3 foreign holidays a year while maxing all their credit cards out while behind on their mortgage payments, again, it's nothing to do with anybody else. If they have to work themselves to the bone in order to achieve it, it is their prerogative.
Clearly they wouldn't be taking overtime from the people criticising on here because as you say standard hours is all some people want and need, and again that's their choice and nobody is trying to persuade them otherwise.
However, having said all that I think you will find that most people doing overtime are simply battling with ordinary cost of living challenges, probably have an aging car, can't afford holidays, and are decent, honest hard-working family people.
On your point about illegal working if you have actually identified that and choose to grass, again that's entirely up to you.
Virtues don't pay bills though and so on my original point suggesting people stop overtime for some kind of grand gesture or to make a point, nobody is going to listen to if they need or want the money. If it was an officially organised industrial dispute that would be very different. But that's gone, done and dusted.

Re: Stop doing overtime
The bottom line is, nobody knows or can empathise with anybody else's circumstances. Walk in that person's shoes for a mile and all that.
People can have all kinds of problems, from serious financial problems as a result of family breakdowns, perhaps gambling problems, maybe having to support an elderly parent. The list goes on.
Judging people for needing to do overtime is simply ridiculous and people judging them are seeing life through their very limited lens.

Re: Stop doing overtime
Would you rather RM got agency so they could stop offering their own staff overtime if they want it?

Re: Stop doing overtime
Really? Is this where we are going, trying to deny a fellow worker extra money, Why exactly?
I am struggling to see any argument to justify this, unless it was industrial action.

Re: Stop doing overtime
It does annoy me that some people choose to work OT, specifically early starters. They choose to work it for the extra ££, but everyone gets shafted, longer duties etc.
In early doing the IPS (the indoor work that supposedly doesn't exist anymore).

They get paid, but neverthless if they stopped doing it for a few weeks it would show the managers and those above just how badly our office is run.pieoftheday wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 08:50Are they doing it for nothing or are they getting paid?smok3y666 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 08:28We have 4 or 5 people who come in early everyday to sort packets, large parcels and put mail and D2Ds out ready for when full time staff get there. If these people stopped coming in early it would destroy our office but alas all they see is the ££££££ and not the bigger picture. Makes me laugh how some of these people went on strike then bend over backwards to help the company out.

Re: Stop doing overtime
Deliveries are getting stupidly long just to save money on staff, yes I know RM have to pay OT but that cost pales into insignificance compared to getting rid of 10% of permanent staffsmok3y666 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 17:15They get paid, but neverthless if they stopped doing it for a few weeks it would show the managers and those above just how badly our office is run.pieoftheday wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 08:50Are they doing it for nothing or are they getting paid?smok3y666 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2023, 08:28We have 4 or 5 people who come in early everyday to sort packets, large parcels and put mail and D2Ds out ready for when full time staff get there.
