'We're ready for an extra 850,000 parcels per day': Royal Mail on the festive season

Jon Nicholson, UK sales director of Royal Mail, shares how the company is helping fashion brands and retailers save time, become more sustainable and boost festive sales this year.

We know how important the festive season is for fashion brands and retailers. You need to remain competitive and stand out to create loyal customers. A fast, reliable and convenient deliveries and returns service can support your online sales, and that is where Royal Mail comes in.

When our customers are preparing for Christmas, so are we. We’ve put new capacity in place ahead of time, and will be onboarding extra seasonal staff and vans throughout November and December to tackle the rush. We’ve opened up a massive 50 acre Super Hub in Daventry in the Midlands, which can sort an extra 850,000 parcels a day, so there is a lot more space in the network. This will all accommodate an increase in fashion orders over the peak period.

We know shoppers and businesses are feeling the pinch of the cost of living crisis, so value for money is essential for everyone. To help with that, new for this year we’ve introduced more competitive rates for Tracked parcels up to 30kg.

In the unlikely event that things go wrong, we have also got you covered with increased compensation on Tracked products up to £150.

Also, to help nab those last-minute orders, we now deliver on Sundays for the same price as any other day of the week. So, if you offer Royal Mail Tracked __ or Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed, your customers can place an order on Saturday and get it the next day. That is especially useful for keeping smaller fashion brands and retailers competitive in a crowded market.

Returns are also at their highest after Christmas, so we are now offering free collection of Tracked Returns through our Parcel Collect service. Post men and women pick up returns from customer doorsteps or workplaces at no extra cost, and they don’t even have to be at home if they nominate a safe place. Mintel’s Online Retailing Consumer Report 2023 found that 81% of people say a good returns experience would make them more likely to shop again, so we think this is a great point of difference for brands and retailers.

Many conscientious shoppers are now gravitating towards fashion businesses that demonstrate real care for the planet.

If you are looking to offer a sustainable delivery service or make your supply chains more eco-friendly, Royal Mail is very proud to have the lowest recorded emissions per parcel, based on publicly available reported CO2e per parcel from other UK parcel operators. Environmental considerations are pivotal to our business.

We have one of the largest electric commercial van fleets in the UK, with 5,000 vehicles, and around 21% of our delivery routes are now completely zero-emissions, as reported in our Royal Mail Environment, Social and Governance Report 2022-23.

Fashion shoppers can be a cautious bunch, and 68% of people would stop buying from a retailer that uses a delivery company they don’t trust, but Royal Mail is the most trusted delivery partner in the UK, according to Mintel’s report.

So, with 85,000 local post men and women on hand to represent your business with pride at the doorstep, whether you’re looking for sustainability, speed, great value – or all three – when deliveries matter, it has to be Royal Mail.

Last year for us it when it became apparent we couldn't cope it was half your frame plus parcels for the singletons and one frame plus parcels for the van shares, yes I know we were in the striking period but can't see it being any different this year as we've got about 10% less staff, when the no leave period starts in December we still won't have enough for someone on every duty.

Jon Nicholson:UK Sales Director:March 30, 2021

Yesterday I had the pleasure of accepting the Investor in Sales award from the Association of Professional Sales (APS).

This award goes to sales organisations that can demonstrably prove they continuously invest in their people, but also that their people can demonstrate they work and think in an ethical manner in all their interactions.

For those who may not be aware, Royal Mail sales is at the forefront of professionalising the sales industry, with our trailblazing degree level apprenticeship schemes to our high focus on continual personal development and our lobbying to enable sales to be recognised as a chartered profession.

All of our sales people have to pass an externally accredited ethical thinking assessment, and as we continue to win Trust at the doorstep, you can be confident that we will strive to win Trust at the door of our sending customers too.

Congratulations to all of Royal Mail sales, your efforts have made this significant achievement possible - thank you!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

With all the focus on sustainability and saving the environment, shouldn't that have been 50 acres of newly planted trees?

Christmas is going to be a nightmare. You can understand why they haven't' filled the head spot at Royal Mail. Who'd want to take the blame for this?

Extra 10 a day? It's the 85,000 down from 115,000 which is the interesting point. That'll be down to 70,000 after the escrow and deal bonus are paid. There is no way this company will deliver Xmas with all that local knowledge gone. We've got guys driving round writing on the parcel '739 and the date with no sticker and not even scanning. We go the next day and no 2nd delivery date warning flags! So, we have agency guys who don't know where the addresses are and scanning inaccessible to guys going round getting paid to deliver overtime parcels and f***ing about whilst drinking takeaway coffees, whilst all the time shitting on regular staff's reputation with customers. Some Xmas this'll be!

And today we had some overpaid middle manager dullard come in to do an H&S Audit. All he needed to do was to go in the toilets, take a walk in the car park and inspect a few vans to realise that the situation is compromised.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, tralalalalalalalala.... :arrrghhh
