Take ALL mail out when no chance of completing

Post by norris9 »

Why do managers ask us to take EVERYTHING out even though there is no chance of completing it all.

Mail has gone up ridiculous amounts during the past 2 weeks, but we are asked to take it all, wasting another 20 minutes bagging stuff up we have no chance of completing, then having to take another 10 minutes to put it all back in the frame the next day.

This direction from managers has been happening for a while now, but these past 2 weeks with how busy it's been - this direction is absolute stupidity.

Are you guys being told the same by your managers. Nobody seems to know the reason why they ask us to do this and if you ask a manager why you don't get an answer.

Does anyone know the reason why they do this?

I can only assume those higher up are telling our managers to make sure we stay out until a certain time, so are making sure we are out until that time instead of having people coming back early. Even though this makes no sense because it's clear that we will be bringing back absolute tonnes of mail. Maybe they also think that if we are forced to take it all that we might stay out and do overtime... I have no idea.

Our office some of the managers tell their sections to take out all the tracked and only the mail they think they can complete, other managers insist on taking everything irrespective of volume etc. Worst still as we are so short staffed many of us are on our own regularly and are told to take one side and all the tracked off the other and the overweight's.

We've often explained how can one person do a whole side(often double mail to boot) plus all the tracked off the adjacent frame(80%+ of parcels must be tracked these days) the overweight's, the specials and the inevitable 2/3 parcel pick ups too??? Even the lads who could earn a fortune ghosting can't.

It falls on deaf ears and the only logic we can conclude is they must report to higher management that the office is clear at say 9.30 then it's not their problem and anything brought back must be our fault :cuppa . Chuck in the previous days mail, out a bit later and do a bit less mail day after day......Rinse repeat!

We were told if all the mail goes out that walk isn't classed as a failure, even if some of it is brought back ...

Yes, it’s fraudulent and basically cooking the books. I find that if someone is available to take it they don’t argue as much, but if no one’s available then it all goes out- then waste time the next day putting it back.

To be honest just do as they say who gives a f**k it will take you time to tie up and bag then load the bits you know are coming back but better the times wasted doing that as means less time to deliver on streets, come in next day and repeat.

We have a guy on his own on a double p&l duty who takes all the pkts and oversized for both duties but only delivers one of the duties mail (sometimes he doesn't complete this) What does he do with the other sides mail? The gaffer tells him to box it up and take it out with him to "hide it" and to put it back in the frame the next morning then do the same with the other side! You couldn't write comedy like this.
"Just take it out and see how you go......."

Almost certainly they've been ordered to by managers higher up than them. Seems like local managers, at least in DOs have given up fighting against any instructions from higher up that they know will f**k things up in their office as they know that they'll just get moved on

I`m p/t .In the morning I`ll be doing one side. It`ll be pre-prepped so I won`t go in as early, (doesn`t really matter on a Saturday) I asked if there`ll be someone to do the other side`s tracked and overs, and was told that it was likely. I`m not holding my breath. Whatever happens, I`ll be doing my time and bringing back whatever. No comeback- I`m off next week. Get in :Very Happy

Back in the day (not so long ago) it was so they could claim the office was "clear" even though they knew a good portion was going to be coming back with no chance of completeing in time. These days they just lie any way even if its not all taken out.

I don't know why it matters anymore what they reports.... ofcom don't care if we are delivering the USO or not. We have clearly and obviously been failing the USO for 2 years now. Ofcom even said so, but have not fined Royal Mail. Ofcom even came out the other day essentially saying Royal Mail should be allowed to go down to a 5 day service....

So who are these reports for.... the people at the very top of Royal Mail? - to tell them everything is running smoothly when it isn't....

What is the point.

These managers need to come up with more efficient ways of working / how the company can profit better, rather than living in some make believe world where everything is fine, but we are surrounded by fire.
