Royal Mail wagon gets stuck under railway bridge

A Royal Mail lorry got stuck under a low bridge in Selby today.

It became trapped under the railway bridge at Recreation Road, at about 11.13am this morning (Thursday).

The bridge is clearly marked as having a height limit of 9ft 6ins.

No one is believed to have been hurt in the incident. The road was blocked for an hour while the vehicle was removed.

The bridge carries the Hull to Leeds railway line through Selby. A spokesperson for Network Rail said that they were called out to the incident and oversaw the safe removal of the lorry.

Engineers then checked that the bridge had not sustained any structural damage in the incident.

Those safety checks have now been completed, and both the road and the railway line are operating again as normal.

Wonder if the route must have previously used an older 600, I believe that the newer 600s are slightly bigger than the old ones

We have a similar bridge in our small town, but they've now built structures in front of and behind the bridge so that the bridge remains protected at all times.

They are called "collision beams" but its reduced the height to 7ft 6 only.

All the 600s are over 10ft high so going under a 9ft 6-inch Bridge was driver error.

Apparently, it was a stand-in RM driver who doesn't drive every day.
