I started this job 18 years ago, at the beginning I had nearly 3 trays of letters per day, and armfuls of flats. That was also during the quieter of times of the year. Now with the 1st and 2nd trays of mech, I barely have 1 full tray, and a fraction of the flats. Parcels volumes did go up a lot for a while, but with the gross incompetence of both the Union and the RM leadership, we've both driven off investors and contracts. Even if we do reach a deal which is accepted by the membership, I still can't see RM surviving financially. The government ordering RM to continue the 6 day USO was really the straw that broke the camels back in my opinion. Am I alone in this opinion?

Until common sense begins to prevail in the RM boardroom, this ship will continue to sink.

Depending what age you are, it's a pretty safe bet you won't be putting another 18 years in.

If things carry on as they are, I give it less than 10 years, and I'm probably being generous there.

My office is totally different, we've got so much work that we are simply rolling it over every day, no one can complete and it's an absolute mess. Sundays are offered on overtime now to deliver mail and parcels.

In mail centres the system is the manager stands over the postman as he tips and sorts. Usually the manager also has an acting manager buddy watching if you go to the toilet, slow down or laugh. This system must cost an extra £30 million a year when every other firm has less managers and uses team leaders which is cheaper and works better. I think Royal Mail is going to give managers 20% of their salary if they can get the realignments with supernumaries to stick, which will be another £12 million as bonuses. Royal Mail putting all their faith in the managers and ignoring the postman with years of experience. capable of much more responsibility. means that we will just keep losing business. The new policy of we will get them out through sickness procedure or making mail centre people do deliveries or delivery people go to the mail centre will just cause chaos with no one caring about quality of service. The managers know they are favoured and so want to make a fast buck in case it all disappeers.

Its just that in our office they appear to be amplifying the usual B&H from passive-agressive demonisation of peoples abilities to actively trying to destabilise people and 'prove' something.

I had wondered if maybe there was a a new putsch to 'prove' people unworthy and maybe get them out on IHR?

If so, I might be up for it and play along.

Yes and no.

I think Royal mail isn't but the job soon will be.

Let's face it when you look at applying for jobs you weigh up the pro's and con's which apply to you. You look at wages, pension, working hours, available overtime, advancement, sick pay etc. etc.

Sixteen years ago I did this and Royal Mail was the most suitable at that time. I wouldn't pick it now if I had the same choice.

Trouble is you get stuck and hope that things will improve or maybe just slog on till you retire or get lucky or unlucky.

I have nearly jacked it in a few times and this uncertainty isn't helping.

I think, as always, the people higher up will be fine whatever happens.

We are definitely not being greedy, we simply want a decent working living, its those above who should be ashamed, I hold a couple of k in shares and would gladly forgo any dividend over a few years but afraid the already greedy tw@ts won't
