If a manager basis his assumption on a genuine sick call whether or not the car is at home is a non starter.. another family member could be using it, staff member could be at drs or collecting a prescription. A manager rocks up at my house if I call in sick wouldn't even get the door opened for them

Keeping in touch during absence

Employers and employees should agree on how to stay in touch during absence and how much contact is reasonable.

There are some types of absence where keeping in touch is not usually needed. For example, if an employee is on holiday. However, the employee might still ask their employer to update them about certain things while they're off.

There are other types of absence where an employee might want regular contact. For example, to know what's going on at work while they're on maternity leave.

When talking about keeping in touch, the employer and employee should agree:

• how often the contact should be – this will depend on the employee's individual circumstances
• how to contact each other, for example by email, phone or face-to-face meetings
• who the employee will be in contact with – this might be their line manager, another manager or an HR manager

Keeping in contact is a good chance to check on the employee's wellbeing and see if they need any support.

If someone's off because of a mental health problem

An employer should keep in regular contact with an employee who is off sick because of a mental health problem. Employees often benefit from keeping in touch.

However, employers should make sure their employee agrees to the contact and that it's not overwhelming.

Keeping employees updated while they're off work

Employers should update employees who are off work for any reason about:

• promotion or other job opportunities
• redundancies
• reorganisations that could affect their job

By law, an employer must tell employees about those things if they're off work because of:

• maternity leave or anything related to pregnancy
• adoption leave
• ordinary or shared parental leave
• paternity leave
• parental bereavement leave
• time off for dependants
• jury service
• study leave or time off for training

An employer could be discriminating against an employee if they're off work and miss something important.

For example, an employee is off sick due to a disability and misses an opportunity to apply for a promotion. This could be disability discrimination.

Probably thought how can I fill my time ? I know I will go out for a nice drive and on the way back stop at Greggs etc . Let's face it they maybe called managers in their job description but the vast majority can't manage and all they mainly do is take orders down the phone

I've been off for 3 weeks, 1 week self cert and 2 weeks Doc note due to a bike accident, back in now on lso called lght duties and I've been 'invited' to a meeting with the office dunce.

Last time I was off was about 4 years ago and before that never in the 20+yrs!

It stated they were concerned about my attendance or something like that on the letter!!!

Is this normal now?

I've been off for 3 weeks, 1 week self cert and 2 weeks Doc note due to a bike accident, back in now on lso called lght duties and I've been 'invited' to a meeting with the office dunce.

Last time I was off was about 4 years ago and before that never in the 20+yrs!

It stated they were concerned about my attendance or something like that on the letter!!!

Is this normal now?

Under the current agreement 14 days sick absence in a 12 month period will trigger a stage one attendance review and unfortunately, despite your previous excellent sick record, one single three week absence will automatically trigger a stage one.

Got a semi decent one in the grand scheme of things I think going off some mentioned on here!

Do they have discretion then? I thought once they issue that letter to a sit down it was a given you'd get issued it.

In theory they have discretion but in practice not really have only ever known them not issue a Stage 1 maybe for 3 fellow workers in 26 years and 2 of them had had heart attacks and heart surgery so pretty major illness

Always good to have a witness when talking with a manager 'privately ' no matter what its about, I've learnt not to trust em, even the ones I've gotten to like
