I will be handing in my notice at royal mail soon after several years of being a postie. My previous work has been mostly office jobs and I always needed a personal reference from my previous employer to get the next job. However in my office work I always had a good close relationship with my line manager and they always gave me a decent personal reference no problem. Which helped a lot in getting my next job. At royal mail the doms manage so many people that having a close relationship with them is difficult and the management experience is somewhat different to office life.
Is it common to get personal references from managers when leaving royal mail? Or can and do the managers say no?
Any advice useful. Cheers.

Re: Getting a reference for future jobs
I believe that all things like references go via an RM office in Bristol

Re: Getting a reference for future jobs
I didn't know personal references were still a thing. I can't remember the last time a new employer requested one from me, just a standard reference from HR at head office stating how long you were employed and whether there had been any disciplinary measures against you. From what I read in my severance agreement this is what to expect from Royal Mail. That said, I know some of my colleagues who are also leaving have asked for, and been promised, personal references from their line managers.CHUCKYPIG wrote: ↑02 May 2023, 19:44I will be handing in my notice at royal mail soon after several years of being a postie. I had same thing. Don’t worry it’s all done centrally. They basically confirm you worked for RM nothing else

Re: Getting a reference for future jobs
Thanks for the advice. I think it depends on what line of work you go into as to whether a personal reference matters or not. All my previous finance jobs wanted a personal reference from my last employer. So i will ask my line manager for one when i hand in my notice and hopefully they will agree..... Finger's crossed

Re: Getting a reference for future jobs
In my severance agreement I have been provided with a RM email address so that if I am asked to supply a reference by a potential employer, I give them that email address and RM supplies what it calls a "standard form" reference, which I assume comes directly from HR.
This is what ACAS says https://www.acas.org.uk/providing-a-job ... -reference
