Nuneaton's MP Marcus Jones has complained to the regulator and asked it to sort out the problems

Royal Mail has responded to a plea made to Ofcom to solve delivery issues in Nuneaton. As we reported in our newsletter, Nuneaton's MP Marcus Jones complained to the regulator after being contacted by a 'significant number of constituents' about not having mail for weeks - or just once a week.

This is something CoventryLive has been made aware of with issues most recently including examples of mail not being delivered in Vernons Lane and parts of the Galley Common area. Mr Jones asked Ofcom to use its powers to force Royal Mail to take action to ensure that householders received their post.

He also wanted to make sure that local postal workers are given the support and capacity to do their jobs. There have been suggestions made that the workforce locally is low in numbers.

This is something that Royal Mail reportedly refutes. Previously it said that service locally has been hit by high levels of staff illness and the company insists this is still the case.

In a statement, a Royal Mail spokesperson has now said: “Deliveries in Nuneaton are currently taking place six days a week when there is mail to be delivered. Some delays have occurred due to a high level of sickness absence, and we are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. On occasions when a particular local delivery route experiences delays, we rotate deliveries to prioritise that route the next day, so that no customers should experience delays for more than one day.

“In the Galley Common area, we experienced some transitional problems as it is a new development, and have taken steps to ensure no further issues. We are again very sorry for any inconvenience caused.

“Anyone who has concerns over the delivery of their mail should contact our customer service team on 03457 740 740 or via our website at www.royalmail.com.”

Is this the same Marcus Jones M.P. who, along with other Conservative and Lib-Dem M.P.'s, voted to privatise Royal Mail? Yep......thought so. The Government were warned that this decimation of service would happen. Did Marcus Jones and other Conservative/Lib Dem M.P.'s listen? No.....of course they didn't. Privatising yet ANOTHER Public Service for short-term financial gain was their priority. Lest we forget how it was sold off, for far less than its market value.

As an aside, I spent 31 years working for Royal Mail; many of them as a senior manager within the 'Delivery' function. Never ONCE have I known a 'Walk' (Delivery round) to fail because of high sickness - NEVER. As a last resort, if it couldn't be covered on overtime locally within that particular office, then staff from other offices (including managers) would be arranged to cover it and all letters and packets would be cleared, without fail, DAILY. Failure of the Universal Service Obligation (USO) was never acceptable, nor tolerated - other than extremely rare incidents of adverse weather conditions, emergency incidents, etc.

I took early redundancy from RM in 2012; appalled at where a service, OWNED by the Public, was heading. It broke my heart.

So thank you Marcus Jones Conservative M.P. - if for nothing else other than your sheer hypocrisy. EDITED

My wife has done over 35 years with Royal Mail, she says she was once proud to be part of the organisation, now she feels ashamed because of what the Torys and management have done to it , all in the name of profit

This has absolutely nothing to do with staff sickness. It is happening because of Royal Mail’s deliberate attempts to break the Universal Service Obligation which is a law of the UK. MANAGEMENT are taking deliveries out of service and spreading the deliveries to other walks. The staff are over worked. Staff suffer harassment and bullying at levels that are intolerable. Open your eyes to the truth and stop this corruption.
