I think the one thing that is obvious now is that Thompson’s “best and final offer” was pretty terrible for Royal Mail.

Only extending the coverage period to 18 months was effectively kicking the cam down the road and was likely to lead to more contention in October.

It would probably have put RM in a tight spot too given it is unlikely that inflation (or at least the felt effects of it) would have sufficiently cooled by then and the business cannot afford another long running dispute so quickly after this one.

So… maybe… that was the deal to take, as crap as that looked at the time? 🤷🏻‍♂️

We will only know when we see what has been agreed (I’m wondering if it could be a combination of the two proposals put forward, so £1,500, +6% 2023 and 2% 2024).

However - and I hope the CWU has put this forward - any reward issued now for 2024 should be reviewable come that point and have scope for an additional increase should the company return to profitability by that time.

I assume with all these comments the deal has been ratified by the PEC and we all know what’s in it ??

Exactly , all these comments are pointless till we have seen the 30 page document and read all the small print .
Be patient and study every single word of document when it eventually comes out then make your comments based on fact .

Its not a 10% deal we have already had the imposed 2% last year thats gone it will probably be 8% over the next 2 years crap
I know , so with inflation mostly at 10% for the past year, we have effectively taken a 8% hit over the past 12 months!!
Inflation over the time covered by the pay deal offered a few weeks ago will be something like 25-30%.

So Royal Mail get everything they want and we get a paycut in return.
Hmm not sure you understand inflation and how its measured.
Inflation was 11% last year, likely 10% this year, probably at least 5% at the end of 2024. That means prices will have risen 25-30% by the end of the period covered by the pay deal.

A 10% pay rise is therefore at least a 10% real terms paycut.

You are correct, however many UK Citizen's like "free" stuff that we can't afford and they also support Moronic sanctions against Russia so inflation ain't going away.

How can you blame consumers for inflation when all the service industries are reporting record profits, supermarkets likewise. They are fleecing us all with impunity. The price of the weekly shop isn’t going up because of what is happening in Russia/Ukraine or indeed Covid fallout, because we literally have the worst economy in the world pretty much, with neighbouring countries showing nowhere near 10% inflation. Strange how they aren’t being impacted by the war in Ukraine but we are :hmmmm

Almost as if prices are rising so as corporations can register record profits at our expense. With the government waving it all away by blaming wars and disease.

Sanctioning the World's second biggest energy producer was total insanity.
Energy is an input cost for all economic activity.
In a nutshell high energy prices cause inflation.

Companies buy energy in advance so they aren't going sell energy they have bought previously at a loss.
Anyhow once interest rate rises kick in Energy Prices will drop as people lose their jobs and businesses as this will cause demand destruction.
After that happens inflation will take hold again as Central Banks print money to stimulate the economy.

I can't wait to hear your explanation of what causes inflation, cLOUless.
