I'm with you on that point. Why the hell someone earning £50k can get any assistance from the govt is beyond me. I don't think covid and the furlough scheme helped in people's attitudes, although fully understand why it had to be done. More affluent people who were furloughed now seem to think the govt should bail them out of any hardship '"can't afford my mortgage or energy bills as they've gone up so much, please pay them so we can still have three cars and gym membership and eat out once a week " seems to be engrained in some now. What happened to saving for harder times? People seem to want to keep their savings and ask for handouts.

Exactly. And you get these people on 50k a year and even they are struggling.....struggling to maintain a luxury lifestyle so they seek benefits to top up the wages. Makes me sick

In what world do you think you can earn 50k and still receive benefits? I am talking about people like Amazon employees - being paid the bare minimum, and being working poor, while the owner continues to rake in billions. That money should be used to invest in his workforce, but no, we are paying instead, via our tax money topping up their wages.

Maybe we should make it more attractive to work then by providing a decent wage for more menial jobs? I have no idea how young kids today can even afford to rent houses let alone buy one. Not that I believe the welfare system is anywhere near as cushy an option as you make out.
£1,400 to rent a 2 bedroom house where I am from.... that's essentially our whole months wages gone on rent alone.

£350,000 to buy a 2 bed house.... we earn £25,000, you can borrow 4.5x income.... that's £112,500. If you had 2 posties that were married and wanting to buy a 2 bed home they'd need a £125,000 deposit.

I have no idea how people on these wages in the wealthier parts of the country get by.

In this world. You can still get universal credit if you earn £50k. Look it up.

Single parent families with two kids an income of up to £52k can claim universal credits. To be honest £50k a year isn’t a lot of money especially if you have a family.

Cannot see how you can say a single parent with two kids with an income of 52 k a year can claim Universal Credit because of the government's benefit cap.

Benefits are means tested so they will deduct any additional household income from any benefit entitlement

£2110.25 per month for lone parents with children living with them in London

£1835 per month for lone parents with children living with them not resident in Greater London,

The above figures include housing costs

Your point was, it is too easy to live on benefits without working. If you stop working, you aren’t earning 50k. Besides, I have no issue with people on that amount receiving child benefits either. 50k isn’t a high wage at all. A household income of 50k even less so.

That said, I still think corporations and businesses should be paying better wages so we don’t end up subsidising these payments.

Why would corporations pay more for Labour when they can draw on a plentiful supply of cheap immigrant Labour?

But I thought all the immigrants were here to claim benefits, council houses and not work a day in their lives?

The Labour Market is like any other market, in simple terms an oversupply of labour keeps the price of labour down.
An undersupply of labour pushes wages up.
Big Corporations and Politicians love cheap labour as it maximises profits and has the added bonus of silencing people who point this out by calling them racists.
It's a win,win for the wealthy and readily supported by the hard of thinking.

There is no such thing now which is why no farmers around here can source any workers. We’ve made it more difficult and less appealing to work here.
