The state pension has increased with inflation. It should be mandatory that wages do the same. Not just us, all industries. Then there would be no pay disputes, everyone knows where they stand. How the companies afford the wage increases is their problem. The workers are number one priority and should be looked after before all other expenditures are taken into account.

But how would the company make up the money?
By passing on the charges to customers. Who will either go elsewhere making the company weaker or who will pass their price increase back on to customers.
If you don’t care that the company will lose customers and more money then don’t pretend you are any different to me who is in it for myself.
Like I said, in 5 years we will be minimum wage and we can all get a yearly pay deal.
The ‘gibberish’ came from the post before. If, like you said, that most posties have nothing left after paying their bills then yes. You would need pay raise to be same as inflation. But not every postman is paying 300 a week on bills and shopping.
Who cares what they are spending it on? That is their business. They want to maintain their current basic lifestyle - not just have enough for bills and shopping.
Your argument is tantamount to saying we were being overpaid in December 2021 because we could afford more than bills and shopping. Jesus wept!
You assume every postman has a ‘basic’ lifestyle?
The cost of living has gone up…. Some other poster said that it was 20% in the last couple of years….
Are RM just to keep giving pay raises no matter how high inflation goes? Some financial experts say that that is not the way to go and will only keep us struggling for longer.
I read last week that oil and food will go up again later this year…..should RM give us more money then as well?
These are bad times. But in the good times (when my house value was increasing by hundreds every day) we didn’t all say we don’t need a pay raise.
Inflation is not the problem of RM. We lost that privilege when we let the shareholders get in.
What kind of lifestyle a poster has ? I reckon a small minority have a good lifestyle but that could be due to any number of other factors such as good fortune, inheritances, well paid partners, or just plain good financial planning over the years.
But I'd wager that the vast majority are scraping by.
Who are these financial experts? It's the government largely because they can't afford to pay large payrolls for the NHS and all other governement workers. And why is that? Poor financial management - billions wasted during the pandemic.
RM is a microcosm of the government - they say they can't afford to pay us - but why is that? Due to poor financial management and greed. By my calculation - each 1% of a pay rise for 115,000 workers on an average 25,000 salary would cost £29 million.
They offered us a 2% payrise last year that would cost them an extra £58 million. Yet they paid their shareholders 450 million.
They could have offered us 7% at a £204 million cost and given themselves 'only' £300 million. But No!!! They put you me and every other postee over a barrel and greedily took that extra 150 million.

That’s shareholders for ya. They come first. I don’t like it anymore than you do.

So, please, enough of your "we just need a smaller pay rise to break even" nonsense. The money was there before they greedily awarded themselves 450 million which equates to a 15.5% pay rise for all 115,000 postal workers.
Nobody was/is asking for 15%. They could have offered us 7% and a few strings and there would have been an agreement and RM wouldn't have lost 250 million (equals another 9% payrise) since I.A started.

7% was already turned down. Described as pitiful by the union. The strings attached depend on who’s being asked. Some don’t care about start times. Some don’t care about sick pay etc…
And my point was that to stay the same we don’t always need a pay rise to match inflation.

It wasn't a straight 7% half of it was on unmanageable targets.

Who pays for the State Pension to go up with inflation?
And how would Royal Mail maintain that pay rise for the next five years when traffic is down?
People need to look into the future, not past
In April 22 we were looking in to the future - the following year to where we are now.
I have no problem equating pay rises with profits. Where was our massive pay rise in April 21 after all the pandemic profits? Can't just be profits to the shareholders when times are good and nothing for the workers when times are bad.
The overriding objectives in law with a privatized industry are financial returns to the share holder.
There is no obligation on any employer to give its employees a pay rise.
I'm no socialist, just a fair minded person. Paying £450 million to shareholders and offering a 2% pay rise which equates to just £58 million to the employees [who generated that massive profit] is unjust and exploitative.
In a civilised society there is no room for exploitation. Laws should be introduced to correlate shareholder return to employee remuneration.

So what do you think of the new proposal?
I would probably take option b IF it got put to a vote but they've went the stupidest way around it instead of gradually over years bringing changes in,they've thrown the whole basket at us thinking we are weak and tried to bully everything in they've got to be the dumbest CEOs not bringing the workforce with them, they are now in a predicament with ofcom, the workers, businesses clearly going elsewhere.
