How much notice does somebody who started working for royal mail in 2019 have to give ?

4 weeks, but what are they going to do if you just leave ? Depends on if you want to be a 'good' leaver or not. To be honest, I sure RM would just think, "Good, another one gone".

it's actually not for me it's a ex colleague who's got a job lined up , i left jan after 32 years and again had another job lined up .

i gave a weeks notice the week before christmas and left first week in jan .

Why lose a s**t job for the job you want fuckem and see what they can do to you sod all I expect that many leaving now it is like air traffic control at the end of the day we are but numbers to them.

Stricktly speaking 4 weeks but nothing you could do if you left earlier. On the other hand, you could be creative and couple of days after having given your notice, get yourself signed off for 4 weeks by your GP. Play them at their own game

If he is owed leave it is likely they won't pay it if he doesn't work his notice (4 weeks). That said my mate had 3 weeks' leave left so they told him to take it and only do a week's notice.
