I haven't been on here since inception and only posted a couple of times but I am an on the street postman (not in disguise manager or otherwise)of 20 years who has read most things posted here and either agreed or shaken my head on many occasions.
I think the personal abuse of the CEO has been out of order at times and ultimately unnecessary as his own actions have shown him to be the company tool he is, his appearances in front of the government committee have been as unprofessional as Royal Mail Management have shown to be in all the years I have been employed here, my first posting 20 years ago on a flip chart suggestion scheme being...effective professional management!
Leading from this, we hand on heart know the company has to modernise and become more professionally efficient but the way they have tried to do this over the years has been half hearted and dictated to by a draconian jobs for the boys union, who are now being found out for the lazy, dug into the trenches whipping boys they are and now will offer us a deal that talks about suspensions not happening and silly savings that mean nothing to the hard doje by front line posties that will be working so much harder for a real time pay cut.
Yes, the company is apparently losing money BUT as someone who worked in finance previously and indeed manages his household finances every day, who would ever reap while the sun shines and spend (dividends etc) without saving for a rainy day.....the financial director should be prosecuted.
They the owners and top execs, clearly don't want us to succeed as we are, have lied under oath and the union are neither able or unwilling to be as strong as its members want it to be. It's almost an impossible position without the revolution we and the country in general desperately need!!

Re: I am not Gary Lineker but.....
Congratulations to the CWU for showing their support for Gary Lineker by not turning up today. Solidarity!
My gut feeling tells that the CWU are not entirely happy with the agreement in some way. Look at Unions when they believe they have got a great deal, they can't wait to announce it to their members!! For example the FBU recent pay deal with up to 12%. The overwhelming mandate for strike action being the crucial factor in moving their employers to make their revised offer....
The Royal Mail board though have badly managed the company. The CWU were crying out to get in touch with chairman Keith Williams to intervene but he wasn't interested. What else does a Chairman do? Its only when Keith was called into a Select Committee that he decided to meet up with Dave Ward beforehand. But if the company were losing the millions that they claim, why on earth didn't he step in? This is a guy with plenty of business experience and resolved the dispute with the cabin crew with BA.

They lost loads of allowances and all new starters were on inferior pay and conditions.

It was Keith Williams predecessor that forced BA members to go on strike action as the company planned to cut nearly 2,000 cabin crew jobs and freeze pay. That led to a 18 month dispute involving 4 strike ballots and 3 legal battles in which BA members lost 22 days pay by striking. Ironically, the company also used a volunteer workforce and hired aircraft from other airlines just to keep flights going. When Keith Williams stepped in the dispute was resolved when staff voted overwhelming in favour of a settlement which saw them receive decent pay rises and travel concessions. There was also agreements on safeguarding routes and working arrangements.
But the main point I was making is why Keith Williams didn't step in when relations between Simon Thompson and the CWU was reaching an impasse? Instead he appears to have taken a back seat and let Simon Thompson take all the flak making a complete hash of negotiations.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Joint statement from Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU): talks extended
Negotiations under a new process between the senior leadership of both RMG and the CWU facilitated by Brendan Barber (former TUC General Secretary and ACAS Chair) supported by Marina Glasgow (Chief Conciliator of ACAS) have been taking place.
Talks continued this weekend. Progress has been made in some areas and it has been agreed to extend the talks into this week.
Both parties reiterate the importance of the full adherence to the joint statement and appendix agreed on Thursday 2nd March and the need for workplace tensions to be reduced. Both parties confirm that, as agreed, local disagreements on revisions will be referred to the fast track escalation process set out in the Annex to the joint statement and that any unagreed changes will not be implemented during this process.
We will update you as soon as we can.
