LTB 058/23 - CWU Low Level Letterbox Campaign: (CWU Response to the Government Public Consultation on ‘The Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill - Reforms to National Planning Policy’ – ‘Letterbox Heights’)

Basically CWU have responded as follows:

The ‘Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill: Reforms to National Planning Policy’ offers an
opportunity to finally deal with this long outstanding matter and the CWU suggests that
the Part 12: Miscellaneous section of the bill should include a new clause, after Clause
214, that The National Planning Policy Framework stipulates that in regards to Letterbox
heights, the centreline of the letter box aperture should be at a height between 700
mm/70 cm (2 ft. 3.5 inches) 1700mm/170 cm (5ft 7inches), in line with European
Standard (EN 13724).

and

The response also makes reference to the House of Lords, Amendment number 476 to the Bill
which would insert a new Clause in respect of a legal “minimum letterbox height” of 70cm
from the ground. The CWU is urging the government to support it.

The so called guidelines for new builds and people putting a new door on,,it seems the manufacturers aren't listening,,,all letterboxs down at 2 inches from the ground,,,ffs

Have had 15 new doors with letterboxes changed on my walk in the last couple of years. Two are waist height, the rest at ankle height with one 2cm off the ground! Not many changes it might seem, but enough to constantly niggle my back and often cause a flare up.

Now I just knock on the door if one of the low ones have mail. Would rather waste a couple of minutes than end up crippled and in pain!

Should make them all illegal not just new builds!

I have some on my walk that are 2cm off the ground AND you cant get your finger under the letterbox to lift it without using a pen or something

The real stiff ones on the ground I get the letter in so it touches the bristles and curls up on itself in the void if it was waist height I’d make the effort to get it through.

Are they not trying to get them banned in the EUROPEAN perhaps if we were still in that gang there wouldn't be a problem

I've noticed this too, probably roughly the same proportion. I wonder if the door retailers and double glazing fitters offer the doors with low letter boxes on the cheap compared to doors with letterboxes at waist height, as they know the Building Regulations may change and they don't want to be stuck with a stock of these wretched doors that they are not allowed to sell or fit!

At least a few people on my walk have been decent enough to fit a box on the wall, so we don't have to use these infernal low letterboxes, but they are the exception to the rule.
