Parter timers having their hours cut.

Post by Foxel »

At our small suburban DO we have 5 part-time workers who randomly cover leave, days off and sickness. Some of the cover duties have been vacant for well over a year.

2 of them have shifts next week, which while covering FT duties, have been told to only come in to deliver. Starting, I expect, 2 hours later. So they could be losing a significant amount of work. This currently only seems to be affecting two of the staff so far, I'm not sure if it is targeted or random, but it certainly looks unfair. There doesn't seem to be a sensible pattern to the days they have been told to do this. For example one of them has been told to come in late on the Thursday (busy day of course), but another PT on it on the Friday will come in as normal. The PT's are on between 20 and 28 hour contracts but have been covering FT duties, doing around 38 hours per week for well over a year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are starved into doing late OT. Getting round the suspended later starts announcement.

Is this happening at your DO?

yes but in reverse, only part timers can get indoor overtime here, full timers can only get extra outdoor work, which is really only for the young and fit these days

They're not really having their hrs cut though. Your contact hrs are your hrs, any more is extra overtime and should be viewed like that.

This has been happening for years. When they need to cut overtime morning prep for part timers is usually the first to go.

Swiftly followed by the staff themselves leaving.

Early starts are where they are going to shave off hours for everyone by removing the overtime offered to part timers and asking full timers to start half an hour later or at their actual start time - because many full timers are picking up overtime by starting early.

I used to do 12 hrs of overtime just on coming in early. That has been whittled down to 5hrs by my line manager.

It’s an easy way for them to cut overall office hours.

I get you but...

If you are on a 20 hour contract and work well over that for over a year there is precedent that contracts should be changed to match this. It's not like they were ever given a choice about working over their time. To do any shift at the DO would require them to go other their contracted hours.

It would be more acceptable for them if it was fair. On the day they cover a FT member of staff they are expected to do the same amount of work in a smaller time frame.

Then there is also an agency working doing FT hours.

Well the agency worker can’t be there if there are core staff willing to do the hours they are being given.

So WTF is the rep doing. If they have been on full time duties for a year, their obviously vacant and should be filled and the rep needs to get their hours made up. Which the dom can't say there is no need for, by the fact they have been covering these duties over and above their contracted hours. I sometimes wonder at the strength of some reps.

In our office (large one), hours are only considered for making up, based on seniority. So even if you have been on a 25hr contract but regularly working 40hrs per week for 5 years, you only stand a chance of having your hours made up if someone senior who has been happily working 25hrs is also made up or at least offered it.

They don’t take each case individually and make people up based upon what they have been working for several years.

Isn’t that what happens everywhere?

They did this at our place first week of January when it was dead. Full timers would prep and part timers come in an hour later to finish prep and deliver. Only lasted a couple of weeks before the workload picked up again and everyone has been in at the same time since for now…
