Manager has asked me to call in everyday whilst on sick

Post by SGSS »

My manager has told me to call in everyday whilst on sick. I've been a postie for less than a year. Is this normal? Currently it's day 4 and I have been ringing in everyday, doesn't sit right with me. Surely he is mistaken?

What type of illness do you have, is it something you are likely to recover from in a day or two?

I remember when I was off sick with a chest infection. I phoned on the Monday and told the DIM that I had an appointment at the doctors on the Wednesday. He still insisted on phoning me on the Tuesday!

The normal cold, temperature. But it has hit me a little hard, hence the 4 days off.

Discussion will cover the reason for
absence, likely duration and anticipated
return date and any support which Royal
Mail may be able to offer
• The employee and manager should
seek to agree an appropriate time and
date for reviewing together all but very
short absences

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

If tomorrow's going to be your fifth day off with just a cold then you can see why he wants you to call in, basically he thinks you should be returning to work.

If your off from day to day in ours you have to phone in before twelve to let them know if you will be in the next day or off.Sorry if it's not right for your office,I've worked in 2 long term and both operated the same way.

That's unreasonable. One call, at the start of the week to inform him of your illness and likely duration, and another call at the end of the week to let him know whether you'll be in the next week or not, is reasonable, and what I have always done from day 1 in the job.

NATIONAL ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE 2013
‘The employee and manager should seek to agree an appropriate time and date for reviewing together all but very short absences’.

In other words, if you are off for a few days with the runs, getting you to call every pigging day is overkill. Once you have said that the runs is what you have, you should be left alone to let nature take its course.

Some managers like to harass staff. Don’t know why, but it’s how they get off. Write it all down and put in a complaint about them.
’You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new.’
