Board members meet the CWU to underline the seriousness of the company’s financial situation

I wanted to update you on confidential informal discussions that have taken place this week between board members of our parent company, International Distributions Services plc, and the CWU as part of our ongoing dialogue.

The purpose of the informal discussions was to underline the seriousness of the company’s position given the ongoing dispute and to see if we can agree a way forward. It was not to get into the detail of the change and pay deal which is a matter for me and the negotiating team.

The ongoing dispute, with the threat of more strikes, is very damaging to our business and means more customers switching their parcel business to our competitors.

As I have repeatedly said, resisting change and not transforming to meet customer needs is not an option in a business losing £1 million a day. Royal Mail reported losses of almost £300 million in the nine months to December 2022, two-thirds of which was the result of industrial action.

We are committed to getting round the table with the CWU and working jointly to reach an agreement to resolve this damaging dispute as soon as possible. This really is in the best interest of everyone who works at Royal Mail.

The CWU needs to urgently consider our offer and to work with us to transform the business, secure our future and protect jobs.

But Keith Williams told The Telegraph in December that this year's losses are mostly "not attributable to strikes?"

Losing £1 million a day. They've kept that quiet.

They were losing that before the strikes started, so it obviously isn't the strikes causing the problem.
Royal Mail
failing the workforce, failing the public and deliberately failing mail on a daily basis for too many years.

Because Thompson didn't have the right security in place the hackers are demanding £70million+.....

so this is probably one reason he's coming out with this as he knows he's got to pay out millions to hackers.

Yeah... Sounds like the next set of talks will bypass Thompson and will be with the Chairman Keith Williams.

Thompson is irrelevant.

It’s not change to meet the needs of the customer though is it Simon? It’s change to force people out the business and force a reduced USO.

When was this issued, after the ballot results were announced? If so then the results have meant nothing to Simon

It was before, but it’s pretty clear that it was on the back of knowing what the results were.

Exactly. It's not modernisation they want. They just want to shift money from the workforce to the shareholders and executives.

To do that, they need to treat us like dirt.

Losing so much money, they can only pay people like Thompson £65, 750 per month.
PER MONTH.
NEARLY 3 TIMES OUR ANNUAL PAY, A SINGLE, SOLITARY, MONTH. EVERY MONTH.
