Statutory recognition

Post by pieoftheday »

Have RM pretty much de recognising the CWU? From what little bit I know they have to recognise the CWU due to the size of membership but their actions of late say otherwise. Theres a letter from RM on another thread inviting the union for consultation on revisions but they wont be listened to if they accept,
thoughts?

They are trying to.

But the CWU IS their workforce. And without us, there is no business and no profit. So they have to engage with us, eventually.

If you go back to 2004 Leighton and Crozier wanted the Union to become a glorified Staff Association.
The grievance procedure was to be done through Team Leaders.

It appears this time there really going for it.

Worrying times.

I am expecting that sooner or later line managers will be told to ignore the CWU reps at their office. Soon it will get very bitter.

This is just me speculating. We have already had our manager on our backs threatening things and claiming people aren't working well enough - which is all nonsense. It felt like the manager has been pressured into pushing us harder, some things she said would have had a CWU rep arguing against virtually everything she was saying, but no CWU rep was present.

In regards to the managers pushing us so hard now a good number of us feel they are doing it so we hand in our notice. We have had a good number leave this year and have been told they won’t be replaced, instead they want owner drivers. If I get a pay off I’ll be away, I used to love the job but the pressure and stress we are under now makes it unbearable. Less staff will mean less managers required, I wonder do they realise that. The strikes seem pointless when they bring in agency to cover it so the next day is never what it should be. But the strikes are all we have, they really should enforce work to rule. Also the place runs well because of overtime, I wonder will the cwu consider an overtime ban, I know it may not be a popular choice but I can’t help feel that would mess things up more than a strike day?

A 'take your break' rule would do a lot, but posties love working for free so it won't happen.

Full timers not taking their breaks are doing 1 hour and 40 minutes free work a week....

When you are doing lapsing at the end of your round you are essentially doing that for free instead of taking your break earlier in the day, doing 20 minutes extra walking per day and an extra 1 hour 40 minutes walking a week.

Not a surprise sickness is high, Royal Mail allow this to happen. Line managers will hassle you when you haven't scanned a tracked, but they won't ever hassle you for not being on your break even though that is a legal requirement.

Not really. The workforce is the employees that RM pay, and if RM can further marginalise the CWU to irrelevance then they would be able to do as they wish.
The CWU seems to be far from universally regarded as essential by RM employees even now.

All Royal Mail has to do if offer your break as a statutory minimum. It is up to the employee if they decide to take that break or not.
Such things are covered by risk assessments and can be made compulsory via a contractual obligation.
