I always said that I would leave when I was 55, even when I was a young 21 year old new starter that was the goal, but for some reason when push came to shove and I'm still fecking here.

The job is much more bearable when you know you're pretty much bulletproof and you can just laugh at managers.

Nah. Would retire tomorrow if I could afford to. Unfortunately I estimate that I have another 10yrs of FT employment in front of me at least. If I am still with RM when I hit 60 I will hopefully be able to reduce my hours to 25hrs over 3 or 4 days….

Hopefully finish my working life with RM as I always thought I would,but that is certainly not a given anymore with everything that is going on

I have done the unthinkable & applied for another job. Place is in the same town (so walking distance),same sort of money (i’m FT),with similar hours as I currently work but early finish Friday with no weekends.

Position closed yesterday & I’m checking my emails more than I though I would to see if I’ve got the nod for an interview

Started age 19 and will be 55 this year.
I probably have been institutionalised but don't really want to admit it, and I think that applies to many of us who've been in the job a long time.

Pending a major change of mind, I will go in the next few months, probably before the latest revision and the sh!tshow that will inevitably happen.

In some ways staying would be an easier decision, because I'd just be continuing with the status quo. But I've put myself in a position to go and I intend to.

There's more to work than RM and there's more to life than work!

I often meet ex-posties who were glad to get out and one or two who still had gripes with management.


I still enjoy the job but just wish there were more paid holidays so that our bodies can recover. Those unpaid strike days last year actually offered some respite because our job is infinitely better in summer than in winter when you're crawling out of bed on those cold, wet and dark mornings.

But sadly, I have become institutionalised. There are no real careers out there unless you are committed to retraining and learning in a certain field for a few years and I just don't seem to have the energy to do that.

If thinking that royal mail is still a good employer with good benefits and worth fighting for maintaining said benefits then yes I guess I am institutionalised.
I've done 24 years and I love scrapping although I'm getting a bit old now.
