Manufacturer name is printed in the white panel with the barcode. Called yorks because the design was developed in York.ted_e_bear wrote: ↑27 Jan 2023, 20:22How did you know that? Ok here's another question that only a geek would know....why are they called York's ?

Haha knew you'd know, on my induction training when they showed us how to use them they said the name was due to being initially trialled/introduced at York mail centreSpacePhoenix wrote: ↑27 Jan 2023, 22:01Manufacturer name is printed in the white panel with the barcode. Re: Yorks
I found out about the origin of the name from a TV program. It was a program about trains and they had a segment on the TPOsted_e_bear wrote: ↑28 Jan 2023, 06:23Haha knew you'd know, on my induction training when they showed us how to use them they said the name was due to being initially trialled/introduced at York mail centreSpacePhoenix wrote: ↑27 Jan 2023, 22:01Manufacturer name is printed in the white panel with the barcode. Re: Yorks
Thanks SP.
I saw the name on the white panel but thought it was a phone number you rang if you had one that needed picking up
Anyone have any images of the old ALT'S that were used for packets?
Trying to convince someone that they'd be ideal for them to use in their small business for wheeling stuff around and loading/unloading safely.
Or better still is there anywhere that sells old RM kit like this?

Re: Yorks
Was there something called an ALP as well as an ALT or am
I confusing the two? I’ve seen old containers with criss-cross legs that looked a bit like a laundry box!
Another question: why the different coloured York sleeves? Apart from the green ones used for specials/prio they are mainly red now, but we occasionally get the odd black/grey ones and yellow ones. I know grey “topless” Yorks were recently introduced for PSMs, but I don’t mean those ones.

Re: Yorks
Think the yellow ones were originally intended for intra-mail until the intra-mail ended up getting sorted along with the rest of the mail. Remember the pink tray labels, bag labels and york labels?
The old black and grey ones I believe were intended for a specific stream of parcels at a specific MC.
Think ALP is another name for the sleeves, some offices refer to them as shrouds.
Can't think of any like a laundry box but I do remember koffins, which were long, narrow trolleys

I've also heard then referred to as "Jenny's" don't know if this is right or wrong.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑29 Jan 2023, 06:54

They were brilliant if you were on a town or business duty. Just wheeled it around IPS putting all your letters and flats in in one go and back to frame to throw off with little time wasted travelling back and forth with an arm full multiple times.
Asked in a reply above, anyone know if it's possible to buy old RM ALT's etc?

Re: Yorks
Pink labels were before my time, I think. We still have Kanbans at our MC, and similar for flats. - I’ve also seen a black bath-tub or cattle-manger shaped container which is sometimes full of manual letters (maybe IMP drum rejects?).
We even have a few small shopping trolleys which they use for mail that needs surcharged.
BTW, what are these containers?

Re: Yorks
The green ones on the right are ALTs, never seen the basket type ones but I'm guessing they are what the ALTs replaced.
I believe that Kanbans locally just get used for CFC rejects and flats that come in off the airmail
A few years ago now all ALTs and Koffins were got rid of because they don't have brakes on them.
The only trolley that I can think of that looks even remotely like a shopping trolley are the ones we use to hold trays. They more commonly get used at dispatch times where you have trays on them, going from frame to frame collecting all the mail for one selection
