RMCtv : Royal Mail : CWU ballot for six more months of strikes - clarifying some claims
CWU ballot for six more months of strikes - clarifying some claims
As the CWU launches its third ballot for industrial action, we are seeing more and more misleading statements circulating on our pay and change dispute.
This is designed to create fear and uncertainty amongst our people as the CWU tries to build support for further damaging strikes, instead of focusing on agreeing a deal to deliver a pay rise for our people who have already lost around £1,800 each after 18 days of strikes.
You may have seen the CWU’s Facebook live last night, which including a number of statements that are not true, so we thought it would be useful to clarify some points:
CWU false claim 1:
Christmas strikes did two things – brought Royal Mail back to negotiations and brought the biggest concession, no compulsory redundancies
The truth:
On 23 November 2022 we issued our best and final offer, which included a commitment to no compulsory redundancies until after March 2023. This was ahead of December strike dates.
Then, on 15 December 2022, we committed to no compulsory redundancies at all before the Christmas strike action.
CWU false claim 2:
We got “no compulsory” dumped and make no mistake, they wanted to make people compulsorily redundant on the 14 October - that’s what they announced to the markets.
The truth:
On 14 October 2022 we made a trading update to the market announcing a reduction in non-managerial, operational roles. We expressly stated that wherever possible, we will look to achieve this through natural attrition (not replacing people when they leave), and reductions in overtime and temporary staff.
We did not announce compulsory redundancies at any stage, and said we will offer a voluntary redundancy scheme.
CWU false claim 3:
The outcome of this dispute rests on the outcome of this ballot
The truth:
This ballot is not seeking the opinion of our people on the content of the deal on the table. CWU has refused to put our offer to its members so far.
Rather this is about voting for further strike action. We have made our best and final offer, as we simply cannot afford any more. But the CWU is not letting members decide if they want to accept it.
Voting ‘yes’ in this current ballot is voting for six more months of strike, lost pay and more damage to our already loss-making business.
With improvements made based on employee feedback, this is now a deal that includes:
A pay package worth up to 9%
Later start times that only move by an hour or less for 40% of our people and between 1-2 hours for another 45%. Only one in 10 offices will see a 2-3 hour change, which will phase in over three years, with family friendly options where possible
Sunday working is voluntary in Delivery
And on allowances, the RRIS (Regional Recruitment Incentive Supplement), TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) and Sunday Premium allowances will no longer be phased out.
But the further we go in this dispute, the more unaffordable this deal becomes. We are not too big to fail. It’s really important that everyone understands this.
You may have seen today that we have been invited to provide further clarification as part of a second Select Committee hearing. We welcome the opportunity to expand on any points on which the Committee would like clarification, and share the steps we are taking to resolve this dispute and secure the long-term future of Royal Mail for our people and customers. When we know more details of the timings of this, we will let you know.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Those weren't the words used. The committee is recalling the CEO as they feel some of the answers given were not wholly accurate.

failing the workforce, failing the public and deliberately failing mail on a daily basis for too many years.

Re: RMCtv : Royal Mail : CWU ballot for six more months of strikes - clarifying some claims
The CWU won't put Royal Mail's offer to us because they know its a sh*te offer
Why don't Royal Mail get it?? I couldn't care less whether the company can afford any more because this dispute is not purely about the MONEY
The main reason why the company has gone from making over £750 million group profit to being loss-making is due to the total arrogance and incompetence of the Royal Mail board. The fact that they are having a to face a 2nd Select Committee and they are making out as if its for all their benefit qualifies what I have just said.
I'm glad they have sorted out Sunday working as it took them long enough!!
Unfortunately they are not quite selling the later start and finish times very well. Honestly, if they are that desperate for us to all to start later then they should in return allow us not to finish as late. Seems like a fair enough compromise to me because all its designed to do is make our outdoor duties even bigger. Its abundantly obvious that there is no way that posties will want to do any extra lapsing or annualised hours if we are finishing later.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: RMCtv : Royal Mail : CWU ballot for six more months of strikes - clarifying some claims
On November 26th Alistair Wood of RM sent the union a letter asking Dave and Andy to meet to discuss what criteria would be used for potential compulsory redundancies. In the letter he listed some suggestions which included conduct, sick record, customer complaints and not having a driving license.
Why was this letter sent it compulsory redundancies were NEVER a possibility in the then near future?
The only two reasons are because there would be or because they wanted us to think there would be to scare us.
They have refused to acknowledge this letter was ever sent to the CWU
Liars is what they are.
