The ‘one-price-goes-anywhere, six-days-a-week’ Universal Service Obligation has been seen by successive Governments as part of our social and economic fabric. But do the requirements of the universal service reflect the needs of rural users – and how can we ensure the service is financially viable and sustainable? Jessica Sellick investigates.

How Can We Maintain A Universal Postal Service In Rural Areas
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I like the bit about U.S rural addresses not receiving mail at their physical address, well that's because th U.S started destroying their service a few years before us with the reduction of local offices and replacing them with super hubs, theres an interesting documentary showing the systematic destruction of the U.S postal service.RM are currently following the same path

Maybe if the revenue from the highly profitable parcel side of the business were used to subsidise the loss making USO side of the business.......clashcityrocker wrote: ↑14 Jan 2023, 10:19https://ruralwords.co.uk/how-can-we-mai ... ral-areas/

Why does it need to be subsidised by RM profits, if the Government feels there's still a need for such a service when don't they subsidise it? Personally i do wonder if households need daily mail deliveries in the age of the internet. Pretty certain I'm only now receiving deliveries every other day at present (at best!).Asmad wrote: ↑14 Jan 2023, 18:12Maybe if the revenue from the highly profitable parcel side of the business were used to subsidise the loss making USO side of the business.......clashcityrocker wrote: ↑14 Jan 2023, 10:19https://ruralwords.co.uk/how-can-we-mai ... ral-areas/

There’s some excellent stuff on the Destruction of the U.S Postal Service on YouTube.
There’s some huge similarities with us.

Because then the government is using money from general taxation to allow a private business to further increase their profits. That is to say, the profits are privatised and the losses are socialised. The whole point of privatisation was to show how much better the service would be out of national ownership.
The machine stops.

The government using money from general taxation to allow a private business to further increase their profits is what's happening with the railways which is way so many want them renationalised.Mr Rush wrote: ↑14 Jan 2023, 20:43Because then the government is using money from general taxation to allow a private business to further increase their profits.
