New Parcel Duty's

We’re having 9 walks absorbed in our office, which we’ve been told will create 9 dedicated parcel duty’s. Manager told us they will be full time hours, only 4 days a week, but starting at 11am working up til 7pm.

Anyone else heard similar from their office and have any more info? I’m potentially interested if they come to fruition because of the 4 day week, though the biggest drawback is losing my afternoons. Anyone else who’s heard about it also considering applying?

Is it because your office is becoming a parcel hub as I think that was the idea when an office became one, so it's possible the parcel duties could be for surrounding smaller offices as well as your own.

Not being picky but 11am to 7pm x 4 = 32 hours so not really full time plus don't forget we deliver parcels 7 days a week so bare in mind you may be scheduled to do long Sundays.

Stay on delivery and you'll lose your afternoon anyway. Will be much easier work than a delivery too. Are Sundays included on the rota?

We had 16 parcels duties put in under the last revision, most of the senior men signed for them as they where sick of doing deliveries, all was fine , then the turds decided to use agency staff to ` cover `the strikes . except it was a permanent arrangement for alot of the 16 and they ended up back on deliveries as RESERVES.

That's what I thought but as I posted earlier this is the scenario of the previously planned parcel hub offices so who knows, I suppose another danger would be if it did happen and then the parcels went back to the walks (obviously the walks wouldn't get reduced again) then you'd end up back as a reserve.

Doesn't surprise me if they put packets back on walks after making them bigger. Ultimately management get to increase the size of duties pretending it to be a trade off so people follow it without too much aggro!

Didn't they do the same thing in a few offices coming up with bigger 9 day fortnight walks/duties to be 10hours a day... then they changed them back to 5 day walks but left them the same size?

We've been told unofficially that's the duty being offered at the main DO to cover the LATs we presently deliver from our own DO, although I thought the finishing time was 7:45pm.

In winter that would mean delivering parcels for 3 hours in the dark, I'll be surprised if anybody finds that attractive, as finding named houses is bad enough in daylight if you don't along know the properties.

That’s exactly what will happen. Be careful signing for a parcel duty, as soon as somebody leaves/goes sick u will be moved to cover walks and then everyone else will have to take their parcels on their much bigger walks.

I’d be wary of taking a parcel job because the volume of parcels doesn’t justify the number of jobs/hours they seem to be offering.

That's exactly what they did. Some are doing 9 dayer length days on a 5 dayer rota........ actually they're not, they're claiming docket, especially as we've lost 2 hrs off the full time week as well since then. With no changes to delivery.

Got them in ours and they keep you busy but they're a lot less physically demanding than walks and delivering parcels after dark at the back end of your duty isn't too bad once you get used to it and have a good idea of what number house is where. It's a good trade off if you like a decent 8 hour kip every night with no early starts and you end up with a lot more energy and fewer aches and pains.

Can be quite a lot to take in if your route covers several duties you aren't massively familiar with but you do get there and anything that improves your knowledge of an area is always a good thing in this job.

The crappy part is when they decide to base a revision on January volumes and cut parcel duties meaning you end up spare despite being near the top of the seniority list but just fall short of having enough years to get one of the VRs available.

What if your D/O becomes a parcel hub requiring say 5 parcel duties, and for whatever reason no one applies - can you be forced to take the duty ? Heard rumours that management will put you wherever they like, what happens if you say no ?

Going on recent posts it's very unlikely that any DO will become a parcel hub. It seems like RM plan on the oversize going back to walks
