Long Service Award

Anyone know for definite whether a break in service affects your long service award? For example, 12 years at one office then leave business for a year, then you go back and do 8 years at another office, does that mean 20 year service award is awarded or not?

No it doesn’t. A guy at our place had about 33 years in. He left for another job then came back and is now bottom of length of service list.

I think it had to be continous service.

I wouldn't get too excited about the current 20 year service award, it's a little royal mail badge, no vouchers or anything like that these days.

The first 12 years employment you mention will only count for annual leave purposes, as far as a long service award goes that first 12 years is lost as long service awards are for CONTINUOUS service i.e. no breaks.

You say you've done 8 years second time round, so in 2 years time (if you get there) you should get your 1st long service award of a 10 year certificate and tie pin. Please do NOT get too excited though.

But for annual leave, 12 + 8 years service = 20 years so you should now be getting 6 weeks annual leave without paying any annual leave purchase. I speak as someone who was in the same position as you and they honoured it for me, but you WILL need to show HR proof of your 1st service start and finish dates.

My break was 10 years, but as I was able to provide evidence of start and finish dates of my first bout of employment, HR was happy with the evidence submitted and honoured the extra annual leave. If you were in the pension scheme during your first bout of employment that will be very good evidence!

Also to note, if you do manage to provide suitable evidence and it is accepted by HR, if you have paid any surplus annual leave purchase they will back-calculate how much that is and refund it back to you via wages.
