Are these coming from certain big named retailers only or this something likely bought from the likes of ebay etc.?
The one I had was from a small retailer. It wouldn’t surprise me with all the stuff going missing recently that companies will want to stop safeplace and deliver to neighbour.
Ironically about the same time Royal Mail want to shut callers offices.
I had the joy of lugging a 15kg box on a 500m or so walk to a shop in an area that I can't park the van at (local buses and cycles only) and finding that the shop I had the box for was closed.
No problem, I thought, the shop a few units down might take it.
Sure thing, they said.
Then, when I scanned the box (as we are supposed to scan the item at its actual destination) it said "Under no circumstances should this item be left with a neighbour".
I wasted my time going there and I wasted their time asking them.
Then I am left standing holding a heavy box with nowhere to deliver it.
Highlight of my day.
Why don't RM rig it so that when it's either scanned as "Ready for Delivery" or "Accept item" in the DO, having it display something on screen so that then a suitable info sticker could be placed on the item?

It’s the sender that is Royal Mails customer, so we act on there behalf, I usually write on the P739 that it can’t be left anywhere else. I think that after a huge influx of complaints it will be changed. Had 1 yesterday and the invoice said Childs toy worth £4:99 that I couldn’t leave safe
As usual the senders probably don’t know what service they are selecting!
The couple I had appeared to be from smaller companies/ebayers who probably take a big hit (either financially or from
bad reviews) if something goes 'missing'.
So instead of just opening the cusomers door and putting enclosed porch on the PDA I photograph it in the letter box. Still ends up in the same place. The madness does continue. They need to better define safe place. If that's where the mail goes in my opinion that is customer not safe place. What does photographing a packet going through a silver letter box on a white door really show anyway. It's not proof of delivery it's proof I took a photo. We are plumbing new depth's of pointless stupdity. Probably all the barcoded stamps next week.

EBay have probably made an arrangement with RM to mitigate any losses/denial of receipt issues.
I’d bet the eBay seller doesn’t even know that their item isn’t permitted to be left, it will be a standardised system when they print off their postage label.
Yet another example of RM taking the quick, easy buck option rather than stopping to think about the practicality of doing this with every eBay parcel(and it will be eventually, like photographed tracked) at a time when they want to do away with callers offices.

I think you're correct, I've had a couple, one the return address looked like a general domestic name and address and the other was a return to someone who's an eBay business seller so presumably anything that's created using eBay's postage system will be have this criteria embedded.
My guess is that eBay have had a massive spike in buyers filling "Item not received" complaints, who knows how many are the result of backlogs somewhere

You get a big message box/pop up when you scan the item (like you do when the recipient gives a doorstep scan 'in flight' instruction
to leave it in the recycling bin - don't worry it'll be alright).
