Thomson is backed by the board, that's obvious to see. This is all about breaking the union and if need be the USO, the company, everything. It's clear there's a lot going on behind the scenes and the future isn't rosy.
I don't know how they can get out of the USO. Maybe they can convince the government to go down to a 5 day letter service. At the end of the day the CWU believe that would mean 4,000 jobs losses and right now we must be understaffed by at least 15,000 people. At best they get to go to a 5 day service or the government take the USO on themselves. How can you let this company run the USO at all when they are purposefully understaffing us and not performing the standard of service they should be and probably will never go back to the standard they once had.
They've been after a 5 day letter service for years. The union warned us all about this over a decade ago when RM spent time in the Netherlands and came back spouting how good their system was based around part timers having their delivery dropped of at home for them to then deliver. IIRC RM were looking at a 3-5 day letters service back then. That's when the union really started to push members to do they job correctly but, afraid to say, members etc failed to heed the unions request/warnings and now look where they are.
How do they break the union? the members are united. Is the only way to get rid of the union - to pay us all off so they can replace us with a non-unionised slave workforce in place. That 1.7billion they have combined with some Kretinsky billions.....can pay us all to go.
1.7 billion "war chest" to starve out the strikers and fight court cases not to mention the Tories hell bent on bringing in new anti trade union laws to make it harder to strike. Add in the mainstream media and it's own agenda to portray unions and the strikers as the bad guys in all this and who are just a bunch of 70's militants who want to take down the government.
