Under the terms of sale. Whomever took on Royal Mail agreed, legally binding contract to deliver mail, one fixed price to any where in the United Kingdom to fixed standards.

The quality is around 75% for first class mail. So, why would the government allow RM to reduce to a 5 day service if they can't perform adequately on a 6 day service. If we were talking 98% quality like back in the day, then a 5 day week service would make more sense. The government should be questioning why they are choosing to fail and why are they being careless with finances and lying about finances and orchestrating and manipulating events to lead everyone down the garden path

You can guarantee any sniff of the Tories having to subsidise letters for a universal service they will run a mile,the writing is on the wall,Royal Mail do not care for the people the Tories and Labour do not care either,i can see 20000 job losses by the end of 2023.
Can't you see though that things are not going back to the good old days. That ended when we were privatised. We had no say in that. As a business, you make money or go bust. We are going to struggle to compete with all the other delivery companies whilst we are providing a free service in the form of the USO. Gotta ask yourself, do you want less workforce in a job or soldier on and everyone is out of a job?
The USO is not a free service and at least 40% of our revenue comes from letters. Postage prices have also increased yet again this year. In its current form we make money from delivering both parcels AND letters and our business has been massively profitable.
The only thing that will soldier everyone out of job in the long run is what the Royal Mail board are doing because they are trying to get rid of your existing terms and conditions, giving you less pay and trying to force you to do more work in return.

A Westminster Hall debate has been scheduled for 12 January 2023 at 1.30pm on Royal Mail and the future of the universal service obligation. The debate will be opened by Kate Osborne MP.
Wondering how to have a debate between persons who probably have no idea re: the topic they're debating.
Willing to bet it'll be akin to the comments on MSM articles wherein folks have no idea even that RM & P.O are two different entities, debating false/imaginative/redacted data presented by Williams/Thompson and seasoned by whatever their individual substance-abuse regime produces.
Assuming VESA's plan comes to fruition and buys up the company then dumping the RM letters from GLS, Letter won't survive operating at a loss, the government would face an inevitable political backlash that would cost them the next election, they have two options to keep the public happy, renationalise it otherwise it dies and letters services in it's current form with the USO gone bust, I can picture it as this affects everyone including MPs even the Daily Mail would be all over it.
The government is good at throwing money at things if it ensures their political survival.

Would it even cost that much to help subsidise a 6 day service. Also - how much value do you put on the importance of that 6th day. How much does it help the UK economy. If and when another national emergency happens, would the government be ok with there being no Saturday delivery and therefore no letter deliveries for 2 days.
At the end of the day - a national mail service is imperative. It's not just about 1 company. It's a service for everyone, every business, every service across the country.
If the government do OK a 5 day service then they need to be very strict with Royal Mail on performing to high standards otherwise Royal Mail will run a 4 day service by sticking a postie on letters 4 days a week and sticking them on parcels for either Saturday or Sunday, meanwhile their letters round won't go out on that 5th day.

If we just delivered letters and no pkts , there's no way a profit would be made.

This is perhaps why all other national postal services utilise and cross subsidise with their entire network of companies. The USO does not need to be profitable in and of itself, it does however need to be protected and adhered to, this was made clear at privatisation. Any business model has to ensure the survival of the USO as it is an essential piece of national infrastructure. Just because you have a billionaire waiting in the wings doesn't change this fact. Splitting up this company is NOT modernisation. It is asset stripping. If it causes the USO to be undermined it cannot be permitted to happen. Any government official who tries to push this through should face disciplinary action from the courts. The USO is protected by the law of this land. End of.
In practice, the USO is already dead in our city, and it's a similar story all over the country. Abandoned walks that are lucky to get one dump of mail by van per week. Saving money by understaffing and overextending rounds, and incentivising their managers to prioritise parcels, Royal Mail know they can get away with it because Ofcom is such a useless regulator. The cynicism and mendacity is breathtaking.
