"We don't want to pay £250 for an agency worker re-training"

I am currently a Delivery Driver at Royal Mail through an agency. I've been in a minor vehicle accident in September and was told to do a driver-retraining course to start driving again. I was recently told that 'Royal Mail shouldn't pay £250 for agency drivers retraining" by the delivery office manager, and that I should speak to my agency, and there's nothing he can do. However, I've spoken to the driving training provider (Pertemps), a local union rep and my agency and they have all stated that Royal Mail do send both agency workers and regular employees to the driver training course. At the moment, I'm just being sent around in circles with no solid answer.

Does anyone know if this is true? If Royal mail are supposed to send all drivers to retraining if they're agency or a regular.

Why would they not break the strike? The union dont want them there , they would be supporting themselves losing work

I had a bump last Christmas in a hire van and all I had to do was watch a 10 minute video. I guess it depends on who the manager is and how he/she is.

And with regard to this shite commnt, yes it's OUR strike no the agency staff. All he/she/they are trying to do is earn a wage like the rest of us.

If you haven't driven since September surely the "solid" answer is RM won't pay for the course? Can you get a similar course elsewhere cheaper in order to break the deadlock? Alternatively just get a driver's job elsewhere?

I doubt they "are supposed" to send you for re-training. After all, it might be cheaper and easier to just let you go.

I would approach the manager and (gently) call his/her bluff. Say you want to carry on working, but can't afford the training fee. If you're a good worker who knows the job, they'll probably book you in for a course.

I think it's yours that's the shite comment. I would never cross any picket line and the people that do are not helping any workers cause, especially now. It's a race to the bottom in this country. Only by people standing together and supporting each other will we get anywhere.

Firstly I work with agency staff who don't work strike days, secondly when I was agency it was made clear that the slightest issue would see us gone. And by gone I mean just ignored and not given work, it is so easy for them.

It depends on the circumstances I suppose. I had a bump I a hire van around 5yrs ago & had to watch a couple of training videos. I went in before my start time & booked OT. This was my first misdemeanour in over a decade of driving for RM. We have had new recruits since who have had similar bumps & had to re-do their changeover. I cannot see RM forking out for £250 for an agency worker to resit a test. Harsh as it is,they’ll more then likely just let you go….
