First class stamps will rise above 100p for the first time unless Saturday letter deliveries are scrapped

Post by britwrit »

From The Daily Mail - who cribbed it from the (behind-a-pay-wall) Telegraph:
The price of a first class stamp will see a 'considerable' increase if the postal service is to continue six-day deliveries, Royal Mail has warned.

The cost of a first-class stamp rose by 10p to 95p in March, while a second-class stamp increased to 68p. A further increase could push the price of a first-class stamp above £1 for the first time.

Chairman Keith Williams said fewer letters being sent means that it is costing more to deliver at the weekend.

One interesting point is that the article notes that Grant Shapps told a committee in Parliament that the 6-day USO is staying.

Why is it costing more to deliver at the weekend? Do they pay us more on a Saturday?

More nonsense from Williams, whilst ST's been getting all the stick you do have to start to wonder if Williams is the person behind all the crazy ideas, with ST just being his well paid messenger.

Stamp prices are going to go up anyway, so it sounds like some weird face-saving gesture.

This is just Royal Mail's "toys out of the pram" moment because they are not allowed to drop Saturday letter delivery.
Royal Mail
failing the workforce, failing the public and deliberately failing mail on a daily basis for too many years.

No it's just that the business would save a fair bit of money if they only delivered letters 5 days.

Anyway, everything else is going up, why not stamps? Really, how far can you drive in a car for a quid? About 6 miles. And people complain about the price of a stamp to send cards around the country.

If letters are no longer delivered on Saturdays then within five years we'll be told that the price of stamps will increase if they can't stop delivering them on Tuesdays too, then after another few years it'll be the likelihood of a three day letter delivery.
