THANK YOU. THIS IS CORRECT. Some on here don't understand inflation rates. To add to what you said:billycat wrote: ↑17 Dec 2022, 19:38If inflation is 10% this year all the prices will adjust to this years figures just because the figure drops to say 5% next year all that means is everything will rise a further 5% on top of the 10% prices will not come down so which ever way you look at royal mails pay offer you will be taking a massive pay cut.
If at end of 2021 a pint of beer would cost £1 and you earn £500 a week then in Dec 21 you could buy 500 beers.
If in 2022 the inflation rate is 10% (and keeping it simple and leaving all other variables aside) - then a pint of beer would now cost £1.10.
If in 2023 the inflation rate is 8% (quite possible) then by December 2023 the price of beer will be £1.19 .
If your pay stays unchanged at £500/week you will now only be able to buy 420 beers (500/1.19) - that's 80 beers less!
But lets say you get 7.5% in 2022 and assume it is backdated. your £500 will become £537.50. Lets add 1.5% in 2023. Your £537.50 now goes up to £546 (rounded up).
Sounds quite good right? But, lets see how many beers that will buy you in December 2023.
We need to divide your new wages of £546 by the new cost of beer at £1.19. We find that you can only buy 459 beers - even with this pay rise.
Despite getting a pay rise of 9% over 2 years you can now only buy 459 beers instead of the 500 beers that you could afford just a short 2 years previously in December 2021.
This is the evil of inflation - it erodes our buying power so that we become poorer over time.
We should be asking for, and receiving an inflation-MATCHING increase and Royal Mail should be putting up all their prices accordingly so that they can afford to pay us so that WE don't all become poorer.
But, ST and his team don't want us to do that because Royal Mail would lose business and the share price would go down. THEY would lose money. THAT would NEVER do!!! They need US to lose money so that THEY stay grossly OVER compensated. Such is the way of this world and so it always was.
