Putin went to war with Ukraine thinking that the Russians' superior weaponry and troop numbers meant that a swift victory was inevitable. The Ukrainians could have simply bowed to the inevitable and waved the white flag. Instead they decided that if they were going down then they would go down fighting. To date they have given Putin a hell of a kicking and can hold their heads high.

Are we going to be scared off by Thompson's war chest?

No f***ing way pal!

It’s always worth remembering a billion is a 1000 million. They spaffed 800m in less than a year so it’s only roughly half that.

Sounds like rubbish to me. Maybe they are weighing in the super hub for scrap and selling their assets to fund it.

Oh, so Williams is still alive, he's kept a very low profile, it's time he retired and go crawl back under his rock!

This can't be true.

1,700 million quid just to break a strike?

It would be far, far cheaper to just give us what we want.

I'm sure a public company can't just hide £1.7 billion, and in what world would any shareholder want the company to blow that amount on breaking the union if they can just bring in the changes they want anyway?

Feels like a last ditch attempt to break morale

£1.7bn bung/budget from the government?

By Jove I've got it! (or rather, Royal Mail have got it....I wish I had it)

Royal Mail have invented Schrödinger's War-chest.

You can have billions to spaff about whilst simulteanously be broke to the tune of losing 376million a year.

What is Schrödinger's theory?
In the world's most famous thought experiment, physicist Erwin Schrödinger described how a cat in a box could be in an uncertain predicament. The peculiar rules of quantum theory meant that it could be both dead and alive, until the box was opened and the cat's state measured.

Whats in the box? (War-chest)

Clear they ain’t budging. Not an inch. They want change.

What worries me (and I’ll refer to Ukraine/Russia as another poster above has) is that as much as Ukraine are fighting well it would only take one moment of madness by putin to press the red button and it’s game over.

I know some folk have mentioned mass sacking like P&O and fire and re hire etc and I wonder if that’s the nuclear moment if RM and ST simply get to the stage where they have had enough.

"Mr Thompson said that Royal Mail was determined to ensure that Christmas parcels would be delivered on time, with 2,000 administrative staff dispatched to the front line to help.

Mr Williams said: “We've now got all the accountants and lawyers on the front line delivering post.”

I thought they weren't going to start doing deliveries until next week, assuming they actually turn up for work, as I can't imagine too many trained accountants and lawyers will have been that impressed when asked to start delivering letters?

As far as the £1.7B war chest where's that figure come from as it doesn't seem to have been quoted by KW in the article, as other's have suggested why on earth mention such a figure whilst claiming they can't afford a 9% backdated pay rise, I can see even the BBC making hay with that comment!
