No backpay? No thanks. I won't agree to ANY deal without backpay
I get it. What I'd say to that is....

1. Isn't inflation going to come down over time so in the end with an 8% pay rise we'd benefit in the long run.

2. We'd probably have to keep striking to gradually get the deal you want with the backpay - will it even be worth it for the backpay if we strike another 10 days by that time.

I ain't desperate to get back pay - I'd rather a deal was done this month.

I am just fed up with the back and forth, back and forth. It's just the uncertainty I don't like, forever having to keep up with this drama.

Norris mate, you speak a lot of sense on your initial post. Like you the back pay is not the issue. Sunday’s is coming whether we want it or not.

Think if a 2 years pay redundancy was offered, then a majority of over 60's would take it. Can't you get some of our own staff to go and do parcel deliveries with RM, and not owner drivers. We had parcel drivers up to when it was sold off, always worked. Loads would like the split duties, 3 days a week, so why get rid ? Get parcel drivers to start at 3 ( when we are meant to finish, laughable) if you want to work 24/7 and get use of the vans. Again common sense, should realise that's not allowed.

I don't mind a compromise on later starts. Surely it must be possible to have a mix of earlies and lates?

AM mail and packet duties, PM packet and collection, say.

It would take some imaginative revisions, but it's got to be do-able as a compromise? I don't understand RMs all-or-nothing position on the issue.

annualised hours if managed properly and means more time off in the summer as we know how hard it is to get time off then or when u want it
Don't be so naive...think about it..You won't be getting any days off. They will alter your duty pattern so that you start your duty during the Summer period maybe an hour or so later.

What? Inflation is a rate, not a sum total.

The pay can easily be resolved. I'd take 5% if it mean't I could stick to my current start and finish times.

As someone else said - if the company want parcels to be delivered later in the day - then so be it - you'd probably find X amount of people that would do it. If not - then I am fine with those who choose to work later shifts to get a bigger pay rise or instead of a bigger pay rise a 'later working payment' each week. Have early and late shifts!

With an 8% payrise and it being backdated we would benefit even MORE

That's fine, but you will probably have to enjoy massive changes as well. Maybe you are happy with all that change for a 8 or 9% pay rise which is back paid.

I am requesting that I keep my current working hours amongst other things. My compromise for this is they don't have to give us back pay.

At the end of the day this is all hypothetical....

The most likely scenario right now is they won't offer us anything better and will force the contract in front of our faces to sign or be sacked.

2. No change in start and finish times and no annualised hours as you have described. JUST STOP PEOPLE GOING HOME EARLY IN SUMMER! - AND GET THOSE LAZY BUGGAS TO STAY UNTIL THEIR FINISH TIMES! - doing door2doors or cleaning cars or filling vans with fuel or delivering any parcels left. Stop allowing posties to walk off the premises early! - maybe even ask them to go and help another postie out before coming back to the depot.
Had to have a wee laugh to myself on this one. The only time posties stand together is during the strikes. Any other time it’s just in it for themselves.
People heading out on their duties while other duties are still being boxed in or needing boxed in.
People coming back and going home while their colleagues are still out delivering, not one though that hey maybe I can go help them finish their route or take half a street of them.
Biggest bunch of two faced people I’ve ever seen.
Teamwork, doesn’t exist except in some cliques, even then they would t think to go out and help each other.
That’s one reason I think all this solidarity crap while strikes are going on is just bull.
If we want solidarity, show it at all times.
Rant over.

To be honest - I blame management more than the posties. Why would you allow posties to leave the premises early. It's easy to prevent it from happening, especially now they have the scan in and out system in place.

Saying this - I know our managers leave early sometimes - it's rare - but it happens. Assuming they also have to scan in and out now - they will probably never go home early again as they could lose their job for doing so as it's a health and safety issue if they disappear.

Yea you are correct, this should never have happened and the management are to blame for this happening. Why, I don’t know, maybe they just don’t want the hassle.
SISO I. The workplace is now seeing posties hang about waiting to sign out. Go put some mail in. But the managers should be on top of this.

I’ve never actually seen a manager scan in.

The only thing I agree with Norris is your last point - that we desperately need a new CEO

Royal Mail initially put forward quite a long Xmas Wishlist of proposals from later starts to getting rid of allowances and added some new ones like annualised hours which clearly don't make sense when paired up with later starts. However, just like some form of compulsory Sunday working for no extra pay; they still haven't took them off the table! In fact, its gone from bad to worse when the company went straight to the media with the need to make changes in order to prevent 10,000 job losses. They then proceed to recruit over 11,000 agency staff on twice the money. Wheres the logic?

Also, if Royal Mail really wanted to compromise they would put forward maybe 2 or 3 of their proposals that they really want to happen and work forward from that. Because they have these new super hubs imho they really want posties to start and finish later mainly delivering parcels and so that rules out your 2nd proposal. Like Dave Ward said they want to abandon the AM delivery period which doesn't make any sense because they then recently brought up revisions and threw that into the mix....And thats why these negotiations just aren't going anywhere, because every time and at every opportunity Royal Mail simply keep throwing in additions which they haven't thought through. Imagine now going out later with an even bigger duty to deal with. We all know that most staff don't want to work later in the day to start with.

There's no doubt this is being done out of spite. Why won't a millionaire CEO intent on wrecking a 500 year old business like Royal Mail leave the business and walk away?

Money

He's hoping to get paid off with ££££

Had to have a wee laugh to myself on this one. Some duties have bigger indoor prep than others. Some people have bigger outdoor deliveries than others. Some people are a hell of lot more efficient than others. People coming back and leaving whilst others are still out delivering. Why would you work your pan in, then go help some piss taker on the go slow. Name another job that rewards mediocrity and at the same time punishes efficiency? I cant think of many.
