Royal Mail strike spreads disruption to couriers Evri and DPD

Royal Mail (LON:IDSI) competitors DPD and Evri have both blamed postal worker strikes for disrupting their services as demand for alternatives has shot up.

Evri, formerly Hermes, said on its website that “high parcel volumes, Royal Mail strikes and staff shortages” are responsible for delays to its services, while DPD cited similar issues which has seen it no longer ensuring next day delivery.

Apologising to customers, both companies suggested they were struggling from a rapid increase in demand as people turned from away from Royal Mail to post cards and parcels in the run up to Christmas.

Reports emerged last week that ASOS (LON:ASOS), H&M and JD Sports were among companies receiving hundreds of complaints over missing and delayed deliveries.

Royal Mail workers are in the middle of intense strike action that will see walkouts by around 115,000 staff on several days in December following up on earlier action.

In an open letter, Royal Mail, which is owned by International Distributions Services PLC (LSE:IDS), called on the CWU to end the strikes, adding that the task of delivering was “getting more challenging as Christmas nears”.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) responded: “The pay dispute is not complicated.

“Our members are striking for a pay rise that fully addresses the current cost of living.

Ahh the good ole gig economy model is thriving and a fine example of how best to run a buisness I see! 😂😂 I think it’s time for a dose of reality here, company’s cut to the bone that have limited capacity are not the way forward.👍

My COM told us that if we went on Strike it wouldn't effect Parcels being delivered because all the Big Customers would just switch to other Couriers and we'd lose the business FOREVEEEER! :Boo hoo!

Seems those other couriers are crap at delivering our parcels doesn't it? :cuppa

Judging by all the Evri packets turning up in our yorks, their solution to this crisis is to have us deliver them. It's like playing pass the parcel with a live grenade.
The machine stops.

I think Amazon are a smart bunch of cookies. They used to deliver all over my Duty. Then I started to notice that I was getting Amazon parcels for the Remote Farms, in the arse end of nowhere, and they must just have been passsing them on to us to save time/money. :hmmmm

Fancy that being run by people that know how to make some money. :cuppa

it's almost as if we have a wonderful advantage in visiting (with a few tiny tiny exceptions) every single address in the country 6 days a week, meaning we are miles cheaper and better value for deliveries in less population dense areas.

Shame those up top seem to want to drop to amazons levels rather than take our good points and enhance them.
