Update on the last three days of talks at Acas

The negotiating team and I spent three more days at Acas this week to discuss what needs to happen for the strikes to be lifted. In the end, all we received was another request for more pay, without the changes needed to fund the pay offer.

The CWU know full well that in a business losing more than £1 million a day, we need to agree changes to the way we work so that we can fund the pay offer of up to 9% we have already made.

While the CWU refuse to accept the need for change, it’s you and our customers who suffer. Strike action has already cost our people £1,200 each. With each further day of strike, the money allocated to the pay deal risks being eaten away by the costs of further strike action.

The CWU is striking at our busiest time, deliberately holding Christmas to ransom for our customers, businesses and families across the country. We are doing everything we can to deliver Christmas for our customers and settle this dispute.

During the last strike days, we delivered more than 700,000 parcels, and more than 11,000 delivery and processing staff returned to work. We recovered our service quickly, but the task becomes more challenging as Christmas nears.

That’s why I want to say a big thank you, once again, to everyone who has chosen to work on strike days, including all the managers who have stepped up to support the operation and deliver for our customers throughout the strike. What you are doing is making a big difference.

The more people who work on strike days, the more we can protect our business, and the more we can protect jobs long term.
The longer the strikes go on, the higher the risk that our improved pay offer becomes unaffordable.

We remain willing to talk at any time about our best and final offer, and urge the CWU to call off their damaging strike action.

Them two are absolutely delusional if they think this dispute drags on past Xmas. The union should have went nuclear weeks ago and we should be on an all out strike from now until Xmas, guarantee that would have made Royal Mail budge somewhat on some of their ridiculous attacks on us and after 3/4 days walkout we would all be back in work with a half decent agreement and all this s**t behind us(for 18 months at least anyway). Instead the union has pissed about with 1 and 2 day strikes and Thompson and the board have decided to ride the bumpy wave to the finish line.
To all those going to London tomorrow, behave yourselves as management are watching for any excuse to conduct or dismiss. Best we all just enjoy the extra days off in December as come January it’s going to get really really grim working at this company.

So the union didn't budge from the mandate they were given by their members. No mention of Thompson seeing sense and having moved even an inch from his "best and final offer". Consequently the strikes will continue.

Personally I am thoroughly enjoying the first Christmas pressure period in my time at RM where I am feeling absolutely no pressure. Working my hours, doing just enough and absolutely no overtime. December with a social life and family time. Thank you to the CEO for showing me a different, and much better, way of working for RM.

Exactly where I am. Over 30 years in the job and absolutely no stress for the first Xmas I can remember. Easier for me to ride this out at my age I know and I do appreciate that some of us are struggling.

I have said already that with him in charge there is no chance for a compromise. I appreciate cwu are trying to fight for our rights but what are we supposed to do? Government will never side with us neither CEO and greedy shareholders who never have enough and they pay us pittance for our hard work and many years of dedication.

Can anybody see this being resolved? What's else can we do to secure half decent working conditions and pay? I doubt there is anything we can do at this point. Keep striking and starve ourselves and achieve nothing?

I can't believe how rapidly this country is going down. The government allowing super rich to flush us working class down the toilet.
Ultimately it all starts with government. CEOs of all sorts know they have legal advantage over us. Simon knows this and looks like he is willing to destroy the company to achieve his goals whatever it is.

I challenge anybody to make a point for further striking after xmas. Surely we can try dragging this company down but at what cost to us? Remember these parasites will still be paid huge salaries regardless if company is record loss making or not while you are not.
