It's not unusual to see courier firms out still delivering at 9/10 pm some days, and you believe you'll be done by 4.30?

It's a contract of hours exactly like RM so I don't have to work past my finish time

Sounds attractive, which firm is it, I thought most had a 7 day operation these days ?

Mind you don't think I've seen ups out and about at the weekends but I could be wrong

always kinda liked the look of ups the vans are distinctive and there uniform is better than ours (they actually have one).no idea if there under huge amounts of pressure but ive spoke to a couple didnt seem rushed.

Go on the agency and work Monday to Friday as a postie.

It’s something I thought about, I get the redundancy payout that’s 6k plus 22 weeks pay. I could pay chunk off mortgage and then reapply to Royal Mail or agency.
How do they have all this money to get rid of people?! Clearly to bring in new workers on s**t contracts which makes me feel if i stay eventually they will say sorry don’t need you anymore unless you sign nee contract, so may a well apply for the vr now.

In the past you weren't allowed to reapply to work at RM until 104 weeks after your VR payment.

I'm not sure how that will work now given MTSF has been apparently binned. I'd imagine though that you certainly wouldn't be considered until after a minimum of 22 weeks had passed and given the additional £6k, whatever that equates to in terms of weeks pay!

Very sure, my contract is Mon-Fri 6:30am-4:30pm, Saturday OT optional at a rate of time and a half and is 6:30am-12:30pm, the depot closes at 12:30pm Saturdays and is closed Sundays

Hi I wouldn't recommend ups,left royal mail 6 years ago ish.ups good money but very busy plus look at the size of the vans ,just tells you what size parcels you'll be handling on your own upto 70kg collections to...no life on that job.the only advice I can give is to me all couriers ,dhl evri etc all the same. ...I'd definitely do something completely different but that's me...I can't believe what's happened to royal mail.such a shame

Given that rival courier companies have far worse T&C's than RM, would anyone really recommend UPS (or anyone else) as alternative employment though?

For those saying that other couriers offer worse terms and conditions than Royal Mail.....by a couple of years' time Royal Mail (if it IS still Royal Mail by then) will be hardly any different, no matter what the militant ones say, and even when Thompson is sacked and replaced, it will simply be more of the same, as while it is a privatised company with shareholders, they will always be at the front of the queue for being kept sweet. This dispute has done irreparable damage to Royal Mail, no doubt about that, and there will be further and deeper cuts made to counteract that damage in the coming months.

There are plenty of decent jobs outside of being a courier, all you need to do is think outside the box for once. How many of those who have jumped ship say they have regretted it? Almost without exception they say it's the best thing they have done - me included, and most of these comments come from hardened posties - most of which who had done many years' service.

Every permanent employee who leaves is less revenue for the CWU, as most newbies coming in are either agency or temporary contracts on reduced rates so paying out for "extras" will be very limited.

The UK's jobs market in general moving forward...

-Four day working week for a full weeks pay. (article on the BBC website just came out today about this)

-Working from home is now very popular due to the pandemic.

-A push for more flexible working has also now come in.

-Although many workers are still fighting for inflation matching pay rises - I think most will get one in the end.



Whereas Royal Mail are going backwards...

-Working Sundays. Mon-Sun working.

-No working from home (I get it's impossible anyway)

-Moving to working later and finishing later which means the perk of having the afternoon free is gone.

-Pay reduction. Wanting to replace workers who are supposedly on good pay and get in new employees on terrible pay.

My good friend at royal mail handed in his notice totally came out of the blue. I was in shock for a few days. I have started casually looking through job adverts. I want weekends off. Worked for RM since 2000. I think we will get a deal but the conditions of delivering wont be good in the future.

My first option was to train to become a driving instructor. I have two friends that have done this many years and they make a living however the training is extremely hard (especially the last test) and has a 30% passrate. I did read a few horror stories though on forums and some were realistically only earning 25k before any expenses which is less than a full time postie once you take into consideration you dont get paid for holidays, sickpay or pension so I have cooled off with that idea.

My other option is to pay the £3500 and get a HGV licence. I know people that do this and demand for drivers is high. You can now go from car licence to class 1 now which makes things easier. The guy I know well walked out of 3 tramping jobs last year and always found work within 3 days. His latest job is self employed, works Sunday to Thursday and charges them £970 a week, he clears £680 after he has put his tax aside. Tramping isn't for me but there is plenty of mon to fri day work at the £16-£18 per hr mark.
