Well they need to show they've done CR in a fair way.

If you've expressed an interest in redundancy, they could argue it's fair to make you redundant first.
That makes no sense.

People with 2 years and 1 days service were entitled to apply for ~£8000 in VR....that doesn't mean they would be happy to leave for £0 CR. That would be ridiculous logic.

I Think the VR offer was just a data gathering exercise for seeing the numbers of who wants to go. The company wants/needs a reduction in the USO. Once it eventually achieves this I honestly think they won't be offering VR, only compulsory redundancy. As they will want to resize the company with maximum effect at a minimum cost. Remember there is no more money. I also honestly think there is no deal to be had, Thompson & board are playing everyone, us, the union & the public.
There is no deal to be done. Thompson is just trolling us. Tanking the shares for this billionaire to buy.

I am not clear on where we are with the request to go to a 5 day service - was it rejected? If it was accepted Andy Furey said that could mean a further 4,000 job losses.

I don't see how Royal Mail can go down the compulsory redundancies route if this is rejected. They need all the permanent staff they currently have to provide the USO and deliver parcels. They should not be making employees compulsory redundant and then bringing in new staff. The 800 P&O staff that were let go were paid off decently. If they want rid of us they'll have to pay us off. Can they actually just get rid of us for cheap? and replace us for cheap?

My guess is never.

They'll just go straight for compulsory redundancies on statutory minimum.
Why would they, if the staff turnover is as high as reported? They'll just sit back and wait.

We were told no VR in the Leeds area
If they can’t accept VR then surely they could not make a case for compulsory?
My understanding is that VR & CR have significantly different payouts, being that CR you get considerably less. I think (please check for your own piece of mind) that's it's approx 9weeks worth of pay rather than VR offer which was 9 months payout with xtra 6k if applied via peeps app before 27th Nov'
cr is one weeks pay for every years service in other words JACK s**t ! i bet all the ones that asked for vr (me included) get made cr !
Based on?

People have expressed an interest in voluntary redundancy, not compulsory redundancy . There's a big difference. I think expressing an interest in the former, would hardly be a fair way to sack people using the latter. I still think any redundancies will be done in the least costly way, to the business, whatever that looks like. I don't think it includes people who qualify for the maximum.

Of course it's not fair. But no complusory redundancies are. It's about how you do it in the fairest way.

But if RM can get away with arguing that volunteering for redundancy is a fair criteria for compulsory redundancy selection, then they probably will.

And you could see their point.

I could see their point if there was some advantage to RM making people who've applied, for voluntary redundancy, compulsory redundant. I wouldn't particularly agree with it, but I'd perhaps understand it. However, I can't see why RM would push for that. They'll want to do this in the cheapest way possible, and that'll most likely involve age and service.

The advantage would be that it's an easy way to avoid potential unfair dismissal claims.

Anyway, just flagging it as a possibility, not saying it'll happen. Don't want to scaremonger or anything. But it's why we were advised against engaging with the whole thing.

Gov . uk....

Your employer should use a fair and objective way of selecting you for redundancy.

Commonly used methods are:

-last in, first out (employees with the shortest length of service are selected first)
-asking for volunteers (self-selection)
-disciplinary records.
-staff appraisal markings, skills, qualifications and experience.

All this nonsense about selecting people that opted for VR is ridiculous. VR is VR, CR is CR....

You can have a totally different application form for CR.

We were told this morning that no one from our office is being offered v.r. Plenty applied though.
So do you know how many hrs your office has to cut by? How many FT equivalent?
No. I only know they are looking to lose 15 walks when revision is done by making the others bigger.

So where are those 15 workers going?
