I’ve just found this forum while looking for the Courier magazine which no longer arrives. It was from finding a link for help with that problem that led me here. I spent 30 years with Royal Mail before taking voluntary redundancy in 2004. I started life on the Counter in London West Central at Southampton Row BO. I followed in my Dad’s footsteps. He was a postman starting in the 1937, I think. He was at Mount Pleasant, KEB and Howick Place SW1 before transferring to become a counter clerk in the early 60s. My uncle was also a postman/PHG/PED in Barnsley. I always really loved working for Royal Mail until countless re-orgs finally got to me, so I escaped! I worked mainly in finance and all over London. I still have a great affection for my Royal Mail colleagues and, apart from the final year or so, loved the variety of the various roles I had. It was only after leaving Royal Mail and working for various government departments that I realised how good Royal Mail was in comparison.
I was also reading comments from some who are new to the postie’s job and how difficult they find it. It’s not easy at all and I know the pressure to deliver has increased over the years. It used to upset me during the lockdown that hardly anyone mentioned thanks for those collecting and delivering the mail.
Lovely to meet you all.
