Police surrounded a city centre post box this afternoon after a postman believed he had found a gun.
Officers were called to Victoria Street today at around 10.50am after a report from a member of the public that a suspected firearm was found in the letterbox opposite Heaven nightclub. Pictures of the scene show a postman and officers surrounding the post box.
Two police vehicles were also at the scene, including a police vehicle. When the ECHO went to the scene, a shopkeeper nearby said officers had been there for around "15 to 20 minutes".
Police said the suspected weapon is believed to be an imitation and it has been examined and "it is believed not to be a viable firearm". Officers remain at the scene while enquiries are being carried out.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "An imitation firearm has been recovered in Liverpool city centre today, Tuesday, November 29. At around 10.50am we received a report from a member of the public that a suspected firearm was found on Victoria Street.
"The suspected weapon has been examined and it is believed to be not a viable firearm. Officers remain at the scene while enquiries are being carried out."
