You’re in your 20s…would you stay?

I often get new starters placed with me, any good lads I try & convince & help them to seek alternative employment, I always point out the long timers, look @ them cancelling stamps, coming in early for no pay

I'm nearly 30 and reaching my 4 year mark being here. The physical exhaustion is just too great now to the point where any time off I do have or whenever I come home now, I end up just collapse and sleeping my life away. It's completely depressing not even being able to do the little things like watching your favourite shows or going gym because you are that low on energy. Hell, I'm not even sure whether it's a physical thing or a mental thing because I'm not doing anywhere near the amount of OT I did in the first years of being here. I'm at the stage now where I think this will be my final year and just waiting for the 15th to see what comes of this company.

I’ve just turned 25 and have been at Royal Mail for 4 years. Job is unbearable. Too much workload and the stress is overwhelming. Got a doctors appointment soon cos I’m so depressed and exhausted from the job now. More mentally. I come home and don’t feel like doing anything.

There’s so much to remember. Mail, packets, parcels; oversize parcels, specials; collections, post boxes. It’s way too much.

I’ve been looking elsewhere and by these posts, my minds made up even more

Think about it, do you really want to be in a job where you are wishing your life away?

Me? I’m not wishing my life away. All being well I’ll see out the rest of my working life with RM. The job is far from unbearable for me at the moment- though things are looking grim for the younger ones & it’s tragic

Thanks a lot for the replies. Not surprising to see every single person agree that there isn’t much of a future in the job. I’m in my late 20s and have done 6 years service but the last few years have been miserable so another 30 odd years at least seems bleak. Even when you’re young this job is knackering. I have A-levels so back to education might be the path.

Obviously the worry is the grass isn’t always greener on the other side but the grass on this side seems to be long dead anyway

Royal Mail has always been full of people who say it's the world's worst job but never leave.....

There are plenty of worse things to do for a living and some of us do still enjoy it especially when out of the office!

Some people can't let go of the past is it as good as it once was no is any job?

But we should be grateful for all the good years and the job security we have had I've done 28 and a half years 25 of them I would say were pretty good

Id say leave or if not stay and train for something you really fancy. Lets be honest RM will always be recruiting so you can come back if things dont work out. As with most people who fall into the job.Its the " knowing what you want to do"thats the hard part

I recently left after a long stint and haven't looked back. My new job is hard work at times, but I'm happy and I've come to realise what a miserable company RM was to work for. I'd say that if you can line up a new job, get out of RM now. It's not going to improve. Everyone is unhappy and knackered. You can do better.

Why on earth would you stay in this job? People who think this is a good well paid job are out of touch with the real world. Even managers in RM are poorly paid compared to managers in other jobs. The money is dreadful for the amount of workload a delivery person gets. I know many unskilled people earning double what a posties salary is. I know middle managers earning eye watering figures plus decent bonuses. I am so glad my children avoided the doors of RM.
Many RM staff I know are barely surviving on this pitiful wage. Maybe the answer is to move more north where houses and rent are cheaper. If only I knew then what I know now. Also why can’t I find any firm that’s overtime rate goes down after so long? What a great incentive. I’ve seen many youngsters leave recently for better paid roles which is something I never use to see. I’d love to know our staff turnover. This is where we can save some money surely.

What unskilled jobs are all these people doing earning double ? that's 28 quid a hour right ?

Class 1 hgv driver isn't going to be on that a hour .

I left this year at 28 to take up an apprenticeship in something I really enjoy. Slight drop in pay for first couple years but long term gain. Paid to attend college on block release. What a relief to get out of such a poisonous workplace. More relaxed, better overtime rate, weekends off, not having to beg for holidays, competent manager to name a few of the positives. Get out before it's too late

Im 21 worked as agency doing collections and Sundays for nearly two years then got offered a permanent contract but left two weeks later as it drained me. Luckily left before it was too late and decided to get into a plumbing course and haven’t looked back since
