Advice please

Hi,

I came in early today 6:30 to prep walk as I’m learning it, and we went over another hour after finish time today. I’m on a 30 hour contract.

What is the procedure about overtime. Do you have to stay out and complete cos I know overtime is optional and can’t be forced upon you.

Do you just phone manager and tell them you cant complete? Or tell them before you go out.

I don’t want to have arguments every day about this cos I don’t want to go over my time. I have commitments outside of work.

You have to tell them before you go out if you don't believe you will complete.

Inform the manager before you leave the office that the work you have today may take you over your time and that you don't want the overtime. As clash says its best to have a witness. Overtime is not compulsory and you really shouldn't be hassled into taking more work that you should regardless of whether you know the round or not. Just ask them what they would like to do, as its up to them what work gets taken off. Its their decision

- they may tell you to leave a loop or two
- they may tell you to just focus on the tracked items and specials, or
- they may tell you to take it all out with you and give them a phone call whilst you are out on delivery to see what you will be bringing back with you

Most likely that, they'll probably make it awkward at the very least and play on your conscience so be prepared for that. I've never known a manager to say "ok no problem I'll get it covered"

Make sure you phone them with at least an hour to go before your finish time as they may tell you to clear all tracked and special deliveries, this should give you enough time to do that then bring back any mail you have left, don't EVER feel guilty of doing this process and as stated by others ALWAYS have someone resent when having the conversation about not being able to complete (preferably your union rep)
