LtB 771/13 National Dispute
No: 771/13 Ref: 21003 Date: 20th November 2013
To: ALL POSTAL BRANCHES
Dear Colleague
NATIONAL DISPUTE
The Postal Executive has today met and received a comprehensive report on the current state of play in national negotiations.
As a result it was unanimously agreed to accept a new offer from Royal Mail to extend the ballot for the final 7 days that is permissible in law, to allow negotiations to continue and reach an agreement.
Although progress has continued to be made and a new closed pay offer has been tabled, there remain difficult areas to resolve.
The Unions Postal Executive will meet again on Monday 25th November 2013 to further consider the detailed position and determine whether Industrial Action should be announced.
Any enquiries on the content of this LTB should be directed to the DGS (P) Department.
Yours sincerely
Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)

I hope the union is not going to sell delivery's down the river for 30 pieces of silver.
While I will gladly take any cash rm throw at us this dispute should not concentrate on the money above the oppressive conditions in delivery.
I would rather not take a pay rise and get back to manageable workloads.

That may be true today, but R M want to be able to take away our right to work our hours and make us work the load. Whatever that may be.and however long it takes.postality wrote:Just work your hours, anything you cant manage is their problem or docket.paranoid-android wrote:"Although progress has continued to be made and a new closed pay offer has been tabled, there remain difficult areas to resolve. I can't believe they could make that stick from a legal perspective.paranoid-android wrote:That may be true today, but R M want to be able to take away our right to work our hours and make us work the load. They are going to bottle it again.
Royal Mail team moving the goalposts right up to where the Christmas cards are going to start coming through and then say, "Now strike if you dare". Of course the public will be fed with the line that the dispute is all about money and the greedy postmen want an unreasonable settlement.
This could and should have been sorted months ago.

Re: LtB 771/13 National Dispute
Now I fully support a strike when its called but I don't think we need a General Haigh moment in reverse - where the troops gladly go over the top seemingly unaware of the consequences.
A strike for some is 1 days unpaid leave, but in reality its a lot different. For a Union to call a strike they have to balance all manner and number of things.
1. What are the aims of the strike - is it really worth striking if the other side are making enough concessions to at least keep talking.
2. What are the aims of the talks - are we really making progress or are we being strung along.
3. What are the benefits of striking now.
4. What are the pitfalls of striking now.
5. Do we have the support of members to strike now, and what would happen if the strike was not well supported.
6. What extra concessions are possible from striking, and are the extra costs worth those concessions.
7. What are the Political ramifications of striking.
9. What are the Industrial ramifications of striking.
10. What are the financial implications of striking for the Union its members, and the business.
The question I suppose is do we trust the Unions judgement.

Re: LtB 771/13 National Dispute
It's not the union's judgement on whether to call a strike that worries me but their judgement on whether or not to keep the pretence up.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:The question I suppose is do we trust the Unions judgement.
If you assess all of those things and come to the conclusion that a strike is not in the best interests of the negotiation process then that's fine,it's what we pay the union for,to make those kinds of calls but if you do then the best thing to do is withdraw the threat of strike action entirely because if you can see that you can be damn sure those on the other side of the table can see it too.
If you don't what you are left with is an empty threat and 115,000 impatient members not knowing whether they are coming or going,It isn't fair on the membership,It isn't honest and above all it isn't serving any purpose other than making the union look foolish.
If the union truly believes it can finalise an agreement by next week then fine it can be done without the silly, empty threat and with the membership stood down,If they had any doubt whatsoever they should have served notice a week ago if not before then.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
