Probably not typical, but totally unacceptable. I only used Secure Delivery as it was important I received it today. It hadn't been returned to the sorting office by midday, so I'll have to make another eight mile round trip to collect it on Monday. As well as making a complaint and compensation claim.
As others have said, it's the poor service that gets noticed, not people doing the job they've paid to do.
I realise this incident reflects negatively upon Amazon.co.uk and the feedback that you have provided will be used in reviewing the service provided by Royal Mail.
