New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
• Pay that’s 10% above the market average in our sector, paid monthly with an hourly rate of £14.59p/hr
• Overtime 1.25x the normal hourly rate
The above extract was taken from a Royal Mail job listing based in London. The overtime rate for a new extrant if I'm doing my maths correctly would be
£18.23 per hour
I'm also based in London, so on my payslip I'm payed
£13.14 for the first 10 hours, and
£12.69 after 10 hours.
Anyone above the personel allowence threshold and paying 20% tax and 12% NI on their hourly ovetime rate would be earning
£12.39 for a new entrant, and
£8.93 for shall we say legacy workers.
That's a £3.46 hourly difference, or new entrants are payed 38.7% more per hour on overtime then existing OPG's.
Outside of London, job listings indicate new staff are payed
£12.29 per hour, with overtime (1.25x) £15.36.
I don't know what the hourly overtime rate is for existing OPG's outside London, but I'm guessing it's not £15.36 per hour.
If I'm earning 40% less then the new guy next to me doing overtime, don't think I'll be doing much this Xmas.

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
I saw the same overtime rate for a Barnsley DO vacancy ,only 25 hr contract so guessing you will have to work 40 hrs to reach 1.25 overtime rate?
Don’t think they get paid for breaks too.

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
I don't think it's entirely fair to just compare hourly rates.
Add 10% pension and holidays and that would likely push ours higher than those advertised.
Edit- in reference to agency only.

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
Wouldn't that push there's higher as well? quite sure new entrants can't be denied a pension and holiday, as much as Royal Mail would love to do that

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
Apologies I was referring more to agency.
1st year new entrants get a bit less I always thought.
I would guess the overtime rate will kick in at 40 hours.
Who really knows these days with our multi tiered workforce.

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
New entrants overtime starts after 40 hours.
They don’t get paid breaks.
They don’t get a delivery supplement.
Royal Mail pay only 3% into their pension after 3 months, which changes to up to 10% nine months later, depending on what the employee pays in.
Great.

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
It’s well deserved considering their crappy terms on the new contracts. Some people are just so petty

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
I knew about the delivery supplements, not about the unpaid lunch breaks. If someone is on a 30 hour contract, what do they get paid for the first 10 hours until they reach 40 then?

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
Petty how? if I worked a 70 hour week and a new starter worked a 70 hour week
Adding on 10x £13.14, 23x £12.69 overtime to my basic wages (with delivery supplements) I end up with a gross wage of
£1039
If a new starter works 40x £14.59 + 30x £18.23, they end up with a weekly gross wage of
£1130

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
You also have to include the 40 mins per day paid breaks the new starters don't get paid which is approx £36 per week, no idea of the pension position but existing staff may well receive more attractive pension contributions.
I assume there's nothing stopping anybody asking to be transferred to a new style contract??

The new start will be working the 70 hours , you won't be actually working 70 hours because your are paid to have a break every daymattick wrote: ↑15 Sep 2023, 20:42Petty how? if I worked a 70 hour week and a new starter worked a 70 hour week

Re: New extrants on higher hourly overtime rate
Unpaid breaks don't count towards your working day, it's not uncommon for new entrants to take their break before coming in. When this new deal ends in 2 years, I don't think we will have paid breaks anymoreP13 wrote: ↑15 Sep 2023, 21:15The new start will be working the 70 hours , you won't be actually working 70 hours because your are paid to have a break every daymattick wrote: ↑15 Sep 2023, 20:42Petty how? if I worked a 70 hour week and a new starter worked a 70 hour week
