it's impossible to argue the letters justify the current 6 day USO. I had 7 letters in a road on 80 houses Tuesday. It's an extreme example admittedly, as said road rarely gets much post, but the amount of letters now is declining at a huge rate.
I'd love to see how mail volumes vary from village to village, from town to town, and from city to city.....

From what I am seeing - mail is going up.

No chance will I ever get to deliver just 7 letters to a road with 80 houses.....unless a lorry breaks down bringing the mail to the office.

Saturdays and Tuesdays used to be pretty light....I rarely ever see a light mail day on any day of the week now.
Letters are not going up though, are they? Not according to Royal Mail, the union, numerous people on here who process letters and common sense. Imagine the days prior to Email. The only way you could get a written document to anywhere was post; so CV's, credit card statements, mortgage documents, pay slips ect ect ect. None of which is applicable anymore.
As I said in my post - not all areas are the same it seems.
However nobody is saying that mail volumes are up to pre email days of the late 90’s early 2000’s. I’m saying that mail volumes where I am are definitely up from what they have been over the last 4 or 5 years and on what the current delivery model was built on. It’s all very well RM, CWU etc etc saying “Mail is down” but the people actually dealing with it at the coal face will know for sure whether it’s going up or down in their office.

Absolute nightmare today. I had 165 tracked and 7 customer collects. Also 15 timed specials. How can I ever get loops done? Not even got time for the toilet. Flat out for the whole 4 and a half hours out there.
isnt the tracked quota 30 per hour?
There's no way anybody can deliver 30 per hour plus mail, I thought the expected quota for even a DPR was 20 per hour i.e. RON allows 3 mins per parcel excluding any additional travelling time between each drop.
They cut the time from 3 minutes down to 2.5 minutes per drop.
I can well believe this. I have also noticed that it reduces to a blatant 2 minutes when there is supposedly less than 20 metres between delivery points.

This is by far the biggest change to anything we have had before, 2 days worth of mail every day on routes that are too big anyway, what happens if a round doesn't go out? the next time it's done it will have 4 days worth
This is going to be one huge mess

All I'm going to say regarding mail volumes is that I used to deliver 2, and at the most, 3 bags of mail back in the day. There was plenty of scope to do an extra round on overtime and still finish well before Countdown on channel 4 (I was always good at letters...)

Since privatisation, we have been consistently force fed that the business is continually making losses and needs to urgently reform the USO yet today we delivered at least 15 bags of mail and parcels, which are more profitable than the mail. That also includes the bigger parcels that dedicated parcel drivers used to do, collection boxes that collection drivers used to do as well as several free pickups aka consumer collections.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

The overall amount of letters will be down but so is the amount of staff and duties, plus packets and parcel volumes have shot up. With this new scheme they want us to clear 3 duties worth of double mail in a day. Ain’t happening.

Post seems to come and go, parcels stay pretty consistent 9 months of the year and then kick off in sept/oct. At least that's how i see it, as we are now based in a large delivery office i can see that they are something similar, except a lack of staff to do the job and therefore a constant backlog as people won't work over the duty time.
It's a problem of RM's own making and unless they put duty's back in to ease the pressure there's no solution. We have had a inkling that they are talking about putting some back in, but my feelings are they will continue as is to keep us constantly under pressure ( It's how they like it ).
I can see some public push back coming at some stage which, although they couldn't give a feck about, could make them slow down in this election year.
We all live in hope of the great pay-off from this company and again i don't see big job losses this year, i refer back to the election, so another year at least before i can retire.

Pretty much.

How many letters did RM deliver in a peak year? I forget because they NEVER mention it. That peak was 30 years ago, so the decline has been an incredibly slow avalanche.

Their other favourite phrase, ‘due to the increase in parcel volumes’, is a voodoo mind trick they are playing to convince themselves that they’re increasing when they’re not. The peak in parcels was COVID. They have since declined to pre-Covid volumes, but they don’t want anyone to notice that because they’ve thrown everything at parcels and yet they have not increased.

I've been thinking about this some more while staring at the poster in the office. Is this even serious or is it another one of their gambits to make the previous proposals look sane?

Has anything RM done in recent times be described as sane?
They would have delivery walk 15-20 miles per day if they could.
Complaints at an all time high & rising, turn around of staff at an all time high, delivery failures at an all time high!
Vehicles on there last legs, more clueless managers than I have ever seen.
Hardly a success story!

Why are these shot callers not offering senior delivery posties a duty at their local MCs?

Likewise, why are MCs employing 'non delivery experienced' OPGs straight into non walking duties?

They can't create duties if there's no need for them duties. Whenever anyone leaves, they effectively get replaced by a casual.

Pretty certain we're delivering ever increasing parcels in our DO, just because your DO is down doesn't mean the whole company is down.

That's just on Week 1 on Week 2 it could be 8 days if the mail doesn't go out on the Tuesday for any reason, as it'll be Saturday's, Monday's, Tuesday's & Wednesday's double mail all going out on the Thursday!!

Has anybody worked out how many posties jobs will be lost in 50 or 100 duty office as I'm fairly certain it'll be far more than the 1 per DO, or 1,000 overall, suggested by RM.
