This is to 'help customers know where their parcel is at all times'....

then they won't even be in when we try to deliver it.

The amount of wasted time, effort, attempting deliveries for people that aren't in is ridiculous. Why do people order stuff to be delivered when they are not home. Royal Mail need to do more so this does not happen nearly as much as it does....

We need:

-A national leafleting campaign to encourage people to get secure parcel boxes installed. Partner with a company that makes and installs these.

-Work with retailers to make it more affordable for people to select a day for delivery when they are home. Rather than allow people to select 'delivery sometime in next 3 days'. We need to allow people to select a set day when they can be in.

-Amazon style parcel boxes (which are due to come in), of which we can deliver to instead of people's homes.

All 3 combined might make a decent enough difference.

Instead of sending a ready for delivery notification, we should send a "we've got your parcel and what do you want us to do with it" notification, don't take it out until they reply.

Well exactly. When you p739 a parcel the customer can then pick a day they want it redelivered. Why not offer this at source for convenience.

We scan all the tracked parcel as we unload them for sorting into drop bags. We been doing this for years, think we had loads of complaints about parcels being in Bristol mail centre but where at are delivery office not going anywhere
We use to do this before "scan to core" was introduced but somebody high up then decided that two scans results being sent to a customer within an hour or so were pointless! I doubt if a customer is that worried when their parcel has arrived at their local DO, they just want to know the day it's going to be delivered.

Why can't RM have two way communications with customers? When we send the text why not include reply with one of the followng

1 = I will be at home all day,
2 = Please leave in nominated safe place
3 = Please leave at nominated neighbour,
4 = I will be out all day do not attempt deliver today

Then when you scan the parcel on the doorstep one of those messages appear?

I’d just like to add into the mix the fact that over a million adults on these islands have zero internet. They aren’t connected in any way at all so they aren’t receiving any of these messages. What on earth we are doing with their parcel is a complete mystery to them. They don’t know it’s left an MC or that it’s now behind the bin.

Wouldn't this, technically, make every packet tracked?
It would further increase the monumental issue of customer expectation which RM does not have the staff to satisfy. The more items that are Tracked, the more it fails.
What would the point be of paying for T24/t48 if cheaper 1st/2nd class is becoming tracked

Are they trying to kill Tracked now?

MCs will need extra PDAs when this comes in
Are MCs still manually scanning things?
I would have thought they'd have automatic scanning as things go through the system by now, especially the modern hubs/MCs.

Some MCs don't yet have any packet sorting machines.

Blimey. I didn't realise that. I thought all the old MCs had either been modernized or shut down and merged with others.

How many of them regular receive parcels? From my experience it's the same customers receiving parcels on a weekly or even daily basis, probably 10% of customer receive 90% of the parcels we deliver.

But they do receive parcels and they send parcels. Have you never had a situation where a parcel has been left somewhere and the customer hasn’t retrieved it because they didn’t know it was there? Then when you hand them the left parcel they don’t even know it is now late and they should have had it days ago?

I don’t even mean just RM parcels. There was a parcel sitting on a doorstep of a clearly rarely used front door for three days, I finally had a packet to deliver and when they opened the door they had no idea the left DPD or Evri parcel had been sitting there.

If you aren’t online you just don’t know what we’re all up to.

See, as with every letter being barcoded, the company will say this will help determine equal workloads. The justification for the ever-broadening capture of information in all facets of life is a commitment to derive policy from facts. Once omniscience is reached, utopia will be sure to follow. On Earth, as it is in the Cloud, the expected number of parcels per hour will increase instead.

It used to be a very reasonable instruction for your manager to tell you to prioritise the handful of Tracked items you had a decade ago. With each successive Christmas, the plain packets getting stuck at the DO for days on end has propelled more and more traffic toward Tracked with a sort of tragedy of the commons ensuing - the overutilisation of a limited resource. The analogical scenario in IT is/was ISPs oversubscribing their lines so that no-one actually receives the advertised level of service.
The machine stops.

It would probably be the end of fixed walks. The system would determine what area you're going to cover on the day

That is what they want and it’s an idea that looks great on paper and I’m sure it works perfectly in small trials in dinky offices but it’s the end segment of delivering 2c every other day and what you will quickly have is a knackered demotivated work force which feels it is not achieving anything everyday and has nothing to aim at as an advance on their situation.
